Vidio Broadcast Pirate Threatened with 8 Years in Prison, No Peaceful Resolution!

This step was taken after authentic evidence was found regarding illegal practices that harm the pillars of Indonesia's digital creative economy. Law enforcement is targeting individuals who illegally rebroadcast paid content online.

The use of live streaming features on social media to pirate sports content is the main focus of this enforcement action. Vidio's legal counsel, Pranata Ginting, explained that the criminal elements in the report submitted are very clear and strong. They will not provide any leniency or mediation for anyone caught as a suspect of piracy.

"Perpetrators can be charged under Article 48 and Article 32 of Law No. 1 of 2024 on the Second Amendment to the ITE Law regarding illegal distribution and access. The legal threats are serious, with a maximum of 8 years in prison or a maximum fine of Rp2 billion," said Pranata Ginting when met at a press conference at SCTV Tower, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday (20/4/2026).

The police have also detected the existence of Hit and Run methods often used by pirates to avoid being tracked by officers. This modus operandi is carried out by creating a new account just moments before the event starts and immediately deleting it after the illegal broadcast ends. However, the Cyber Directorate team of the Metro Jaya Police has advanced technology to trace these digital footprints.

This law enforcement is expected to send a strong message that developing digital technology should not be misused to infringe on other people's copyrights. Pranata emphasized that ignorance of the law cannot exempt perpetrators from criminal sanctions. This legal certainty is crucial to protect investments in the creative industry in Indonesia to remain competitive.

"Any form of unauthorized rebroadcasting violates the provisions of the Copyright Law. Law enforcement is necessary to maintain legal certainty while also protecting investments in the digital creative industry in Indonesia," Pranata explained.

The background of this case began with the discovery of illegal content distribution in February 2024 that was accessed widely without permission from the rights holders. The perpetrators were known to attract thousands of viewers in a single broadcast, which severely infringes on the economic rights of the organizers and original content creators.
