The three-year prison sentence and a fine of Rp 1 billion is certainly surprising, considering that the public prosecutor previously demanded 12 years in prison for Ammar.

The charges were based on the suspicion that Ammar Zoni was not only a user but also involved in drug trafficking with his associates.

The public prosecutor even charged Ammar with violating Article 114 Paragraph 1 of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.

The panel of judges in that trial stated that Ammar Zoni was proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing the crime of buying or possessing narcotics of class 1 without rights or unlawfully.

This lighter sentence may be due to several factors, but it still emphasizes that Ammar is guilty of his actions.

"Declared the defendant Muhammad Ammar Akbar alias Ammar Zoni legally and convincingly committed a criminal act without rights or unlawfully purchasing or possessing narcotics of category 1," said the Panel of Judges of the West Jakarta District Court.

"The court sentenced the defendant to 3 years in prison and a fine of 1 billion rupiah, with the provision that if the fine is not paid, it will be replaced with a prison sentence of three months," continued the panel of judges.

Hearing the verdict, Ammar appeared to wipe his face several times, especially around his eyes, as if he could not believe what he had just heard.
