7 Portraits of Gus Miftah, Inviting All Parties to Reconcile Amid the Conflict Between Habaib Ba'alawi and PWI Laskar Sabilillah

Gus Miftah finally responded to the social and identity conflict involving the Habaib Ba'alawi group and the Walisongo Indonesia (PWI) Laskar Sabilillah, which has come back into the public spotlight. This feud escalated after differing views on the origins of lineage and the status of descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW surfaced.

This situation not only creates tension between groups but also disturbs the wider community that longs for interfaith harmony. Here is Gus Miftah's opinion. /aal

The difference in historical and religious views between the Ba'alawi group, known as descendants of Arabs, and the PWI group, which promotes Javanese identity and indigenous culture, has intensified following the publication of a controversial book by KH Imaduddin Utsman. The book questions the legitimacy of the lineage of the Ba'alawi group as the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

"This issue has become complicated not because of the content, but because of the way it was conveyed. Personally, I do not have a problem with differing opinions. But when it enters the public realm and becomes provocative, someone needs to mediate," said Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman or Gus Miftah during a conversation with the media on Tuesday (8/4/2025) in Jakarta.

This conflict has actually been ongoing for several years. In 2023, Habib Bahar bin Smith made a statement that the descendants of Walisongo had become extinct 500 years ago. This statement was then reported to the police by the PWI, who felt insulted. Meanwhile, in 2024, physical violence occurred when a group of kyai and Banser members were attacked by an unknown mob in Rengasdengklok, Karawang. Ironically, the incident was misdirected.

This situation raises greater concerns, as if left unresolved, it has the potential to divide the unity of Muslims in Indonesia. Gus Miftah sees the need for a persuasive approach and a space for dialogue so that these two conflicting camps can reconcile and uphold ukhuwah islamiyah.

"We are a great nation. Differences are normal. But when it touches on fanaticism and sectarianism, and is reinforced by identity politics, that is dangerous. If this conflict is not resolved soon, we could lose a lot," emphasized Gus Miftah.

He emphasized that Indonesian society must return to the spirit of nationalism. Mutual respect for differences and avoiding excessive cultism towards certain individuals or groups is the key to maintaining the harmony of the nation. Gus Miftah also reminded that religion should not be used as a tool to gain power or group dominance.

"It cannot be justified if religion is used as a political tool. Especially to undermine other groups. Prophet Muhammad himself never taught that. His preaching was a mercy to the worlds, not to eliminate others," said the man known to be close to various circles.  "We must improve education, the economy, and justice. If people are hungry, unemployed, and uneducated, they can easily be incited. But if their stomachs are full and their minds are open, they will reject misleading invitations," concluded Gus Miftah.
