Ammar Zoni Ready Mentally to Face High Demands, Predicted It Earlier

Facing a 9-year prison sentence has actually been predicted by the team of Ammar Zoni and his legal team. Long before, Jon Mathias, as his lawyer, had educated Ammar in prison to be ready for the worst-case scenario of the Public Prosecutor's (JPU) demands.

Jon Mathias revealed that Ammar Zoni was in a fairly calm mental state when hearing the demands because he had already gotten a preview earlier. For him, the prosecutor's demands are a common occurrence in legal proceedings, but they do not represent the final decision of the court.

"Yes, before this decision, of course as legal counsel, we have an analysis. Our analysis indeed predicted that the sentence would definitely be under 10 years. Well, that was a long time ago, on Wednesday I already came to the prison to educate. Then before the trial, I also educated. Based on our analysis, as legal counsel, we will definitely be prosecuted," said Jon Mathias at the Central Jakarta District Court, Thursday (12/3/2026).

Regarding the point that states Ammar does not regret his actions because it does not fall under mitigating circumstances, Jon Mathias provided clarification.

He emphasized that in the previous trial, Ammar had openly expressed his remorse.

"No way. As far as I know, there is. Try in the trial, didn’t he say he regrets it? Right now, all the journalist colleagues are present, is there any? Because for example, they retracted all the BAP (official report), which means there is no acknowledgment of regret," Jon Mathias asserted.

This senior lawyer also compared Ammar's case with several other drug cases he has handled.

He mentioned many cases with high demands but ultimately received much lighter sentences due to strong trial facts.

"I’ve said it before, the name of the indictment, the demand, that is the prosecutor's right. That is a task given by the state. But it is not the end of this case. The end of this case is the judge's decision. There are also many cases with high demands but can be acquitted. Right? A new example in Batam, death penalty, the verdict was 5 years," he added.
