Ammar Zoni's Party Protests Strongly Against Online Trial, Compares It to Terrorism Case

The atmosphere of the first trial in the drug case involving Ammar Zoni was colored by intense debates between the legal team and the judges. Ammar Zoni's side lodged a strong protest because the trial was held online, while their client was in Nusakambangan Prison.

Ammar's lawyer, Jon Mathias, expressed his objections to the judge's decision to allow the trial to be held online.

Jon Mathias compared his client's case to the handling of terrorism cases, where defendants can still be presented in person in Jakarta even though they are held in strict locations.

"The terrorists are held at Mako Brimob. Why can the trial be in Jakarta? Why is it that specifically Ammar Zoni, who is a celebrity, cannot be presented?" said Jon Mathias in the courtroom of the Central Jakarta District Court on Thursday (23/10/2025).

According to him, holding the trial online could disrupt Ammar's psychological condition and prevent him from providing testimony freely. He is concerned about unseen pressures or interventions on the monitor screen.

"What about psychological considerations, for free testimony, which does not feel fear?" he asked.

As is known, Ammar Zoni was transferred to Nusakambangan after being suspected of involvement in a drug trafficking network within the Salemba prison. The Prosecutor's Office reasoned that the long distance posed a challenge to present Ammar in person.

In response to the protest, the judge stated that the decision of the online trial had gone through deliberation and was based on the Supreme Court Regulation (Perma).

However, Jon Mathias remained adamant and requested assurance that his client could provide testimony without fear.

"What is the guarantee from Your Excellency? We are only the law, this is for the entire Indonesian people, Your Excellency," he asserted.
