Anggun C. Sasmi Debuts as a Film Actor, Hoping Indonesian Cinema Will Boldly Explore Genres

Interestingly, Anggun's involvement in this project marks her debut as an actress in the domestic film industry. In the film directed by Wregas Bhanuteja, Anggun plays the character of Guru Asri.

Coinciding with National Film Day on March 30, Anggun expressed her feelings about being part of the Indonesian cinema ecosystem. Despite already having a big name in the music world, she admitted to still feeling like a newcomer in the acting realm. She feels very enthusiastic yet nervous waiting for the local audience's response.

These concerns are not without reason, considering that the film has previously received positive appreciation when screened abroad. Anggun hopes for a warm reception on the international stage to also be felt when the film is released in Indonesian cinemas on April 23.

2. A Newcomer in the Film World

"Maybe also as a newcomer. This might be as a newcomer right at National Film Day, how is that? How is it? Um, for me, I really hope this film will be liked by many, many people, not only abroad but especially in Indonesia. Because we have already started our premiere in America," said Anggun when met in the Kuningan area, South Jakarta, on Monday (30/3/2026).

3. Anggun Receives an Extraordinary Welcome

"And receiving an extraordinary welcome makes us nervous about how it will be here. So for me, actually, who doesn't have much experience in the film industry, I also don't really know what to say. Still a newcomer," added Anggun.

4. Productivity of Indonesian Films

As a player who has just entered the film world, Anggun admitted to being surprised by the very high productivity of the Indonesian film industry every year. However, she noted the lack of story variation being produced. She hopes the industry will not be stuck on just one genre so that audiences have many fresh viewing options.

"As a newcomer. As a newcomer, I was actually very surprised to see how many film productions there are in Indonesia in a year. And what I would like to emphasize is the importance of having eclectic projects, you know, that are varied. So it's not always just horror films, you know," she stated.

6. Many Think of Para Perasuk as a Horror Film

Anggun also touched on the public's perception of the Para Perasuk film genre. Many think this film is a conventional horror film, whereas she emphasizes that this film offers something creatively different.

7. Para Perasuk is Not a Horror Film

"Because in the past we were always told, 'Isn't Para Perasuk a horror film?' 'No, no.' Where's the horror in broad daylight? It's less scary. No, so maybe that's just it from the creative side of the filmmakers, directors, and also the production house, you know, being bolder to perhaps produce films that are not just funny films or just horror films," concluded Anggun.
