Creating a Zombie-Themed Series, the Initial Idea of 'RED ZONE' is Based on the Case of the Suspended Regent of Langkat Who Kept Human Skeletons

What makes RED ZONE worth the wait is its zombie theme. Films or series about zombies are still rarely explored by local filmmakers.

1. The Langkat Regent Case Creates a Stir

Sidharta Tata, as the director and also a member of the scriptwriting team, revealed the initial idea of RED ZONE. It turns out that the story is based on the case of the suspended regent of Langkat, Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin, which caused a stir among the public in 2022.

"The initial idea came from the Langkat Regent case, where it was discovered that human skeletons were kept, and until now, no one has explained it. That became the basis of our thinking. From that situation, we created a connecting door to develop this story," said Sidharta when met in Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (29/2/2024).

2. One Year of Story Development

From the initial idea to writing the script, RED ZONE took a year to complete. Alongside that, Sidharta Tata and the scriptwriting team watched many zombie films or series as references.

"The story development process took almost a year. From the beginning of story development to entering the writing phase, it took about four to five months. Research was included during the story development process," explained Sidharta.

RED ZONE tells the story of a laborer named Maya (Aghniny Haque) who loses her sister. Accompanied by a journalist, Maya embarks on a search in a city infected by the living dead.
