Director Toto Hoedi Unites Dozens of Legendary Comedians in the Film 'GERBANG SETAN', Raising the True Story of a Lost Village

A new breakthrough in the domestic film industry comes from director Toto Hoedi, who successfully gathered dozens of comedians from various generations in one feature film. Through the horror-comedy film titled GERBANG SETAN, he presents a unique spectacle that is ready to tickle the stomach while also sending chills down the spine.

This film produced by SetiaOne Vision (SOV) stars big names such as Jarwo Kwat, Cak Lontong, Komeng, Denny Chandra, as well as young comedians and actors. Bringing them together is acknowledged by Toto Hoedi as a crazy idea, but it became a reality thanks to the strong bond within the Indonesian Comedy Artists Association (Paski).

"At first, this was indeed a very crazy idea. But I, I am from Paski. I am part of the creative team at Paski," said Toto Hoedi during a press conference at XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, Saturday (12/7/2025).

He explained that the process of gathering the players began with his discussion with the chairman of Paski, Jarwo Kwat, to create a film that represents its members.

"I talked to Mr. Jarwo, 'Mr. Jarwo, Paski needs to do something, make a film'. 'Let's go for it'. Gather the players," he recalled.

The biggest challenge was directing the comedians to focus on acting and drama, not just making jokes. He wanted to prove that these comedians have capable acting skills.

"Although they are comedians, I always say, 'you have to act, this is a film, this is a drama'," emphasized Toto Hoedi.

More interestingly, Toto Hoedi revealed that the story idea for GERBANG SETAN was inspired by a true story about a village that mysteriously disappeared in the 1950s.

"I took it from a true story; if you search on Google, there is a village that disappeared in a day, it was in 1955 if I'm not mistaken," he revealed.

With experience directing horror-comedy films before, Toto Hoedi is optimistic that GERBANG SETAN will replicate success and entertain audiences when it premieres in theaters starting July 17, 2025. "I feel optimistic, I can repeat that," he concluded.
