Exactly 100 Years, Mahathir Mohamad Reveals Secrets to Staying Fit and Living Long

The former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, officially turned 100 years old on July 10, 2025. Dr. Mahathir Mohamad first served as Prime Minister of Malaysia on July 16, 1981. He became the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, succeeding Tun Hussein Onn. In the early years of his administration, Mahathir was known as a firm and visionary leader. He introduced various economic modernization and industrialization policies that transformed Malaysia.

His first term lasted a very long time, until October 31, 2003, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in Asia at that time with a tenure of 22 years. After retiring, Mahathir returned to politics and surprisingly served again as Prime Minister for a second time on May 10, 2018, at the age of 92, making him the oldest active leader in the world. However, he only held the position until March 1, 2020.

Even after a century, this legendary politician still appears active, healthy, and mentally sharp. Even at his current age, Mahathir still participates in various forums and shows no signs of physical decline. In a special birthday podcast, Mahathir admitted that turning 100 feels frightening.

"Turning 100 is quite scary. But I am grateful to everyone who has sent greetings, cakes, flowers, and came in person," he said, as quoted by ABC News.

Although known for his youthful appearance and fitness, Mahathir stated that he does not have any special secrets for longevity. However, he consistently applies a number of healthy habits throughout his life.

Mahathir is very careful about what he consumes. He always remembers his mother's advice to stop eating when the food tastes good to avoid overeating. "If you eat too much, you get fat, which burdens the heart," he emphasized. According to him, the heart can function for up to 100 years, but it will deteriorate quickly if the body becomes too fat due to excessive eating habits.

Mahathir believes that a body and mind that are not used will weaken. He regularly reads, writes, discusses, and engages in light exercise such as using a treadmill. "If you do not think or move, your brain and muscles will weaken," he said.

Every morning, Mahathir starts his day with light exercise and a healthy breakfast. He also continues to work and maintain an active routine even though he is no longer in office. "I do not have a heavy breakfast. I eat something light before starting work," he revealed.

Mahathir suggests that retired individuals should continue to seek interesting activities, not just sleep and rest, especially not just lying down. New activities can keep the body and mind alive.

To maintain mental health, Mahathir learns to control his emotions. "I do not get angry; I handle it calmly. At first, it was difficult, but over time it became easier," he said.

He added that being too emotional, whether when angry or happy, can affect blood pressure and overall health. With a disciplined lifestyle and an active mind, it is no wonder that Mahathir remains resilient at the age of 100. Truly inspiring!
