The public was shocked by the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate (HC) to Raffi Ahmad some time ago. Several netizens online presented a series of facts about the university that awarded the title to the 37-year-old man. It turns out that some findings actually raise doubts about the reputation of the campus.
In response to the wild issues circulating in society, the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology (Dirjen Diktiristek) Prof. Abdul Haris finally spoke out.
According to him, the title issued by the Universal Institute of Professional Management (UIPM) Indonesia is invalid. This is because UIPM does not have an operational license for higher education in Indonesia.
"Without an operational permit for the organization of higher education from the government, the academic degree obtained from the foreign university cannot be recognized," said Prof. Haris, quoted by KapanLagi.com via Kompas on Sunday, (6/10/2024) afternoon.
Prof. Haris then explained that the mandatory requirement to have a permit has been stipulated in Law Number 12 of 2012 concerning Higher Education. He also urged the public to pay attention to information regarding both Indonesian and foreign universities.
According to him, the list of campuses that have obtained permission to organize higher education in Indonesia is already registered on the official PDDIKTI website.
Meanwhile, the Deputy of Legal Affairs of UIPM UN ECOSOC, Helena Pattirane emphasized that UIPM is a campus that conducts 100 percent of its teaching and learning activities online.
"The existence of UIPM in carrying out higher education in the format of distance education and using a full 100 percent online learning system, virtual campus or non-real campus," said Helena as quoted from her written statement.
Netizens have reacted in various ways regarding the controversy surrounding HC degree for Raffi Ahmad. Some support it because Raffi indeed has competence and contributions in the entertainment industry of the homeland.Â
