Akira Toriyama is a legendary Japanese mangaka. His legendary work, DRAGON BALL, is certainly familiar to the general public.
Sad news has just come from the legend behind DRAGON BALL. Akira Toriyama is reported to have passed away at the age of 68. While remembering the legend, let's take a look at the following facts about Akira Toriyama.
Akira Toriyama was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955. He started his career as a mangaka at the age of 23. Initially, he never imagined himself becoming a mangaka.
Akira's main goal in working in the manga industry was to make money as soon as possible. Previously, he had worked for a design company. However, Akira felt that the job was not suitable for him and decided to quit.
Akira once became the president of a manga club while in high school. Unbeknownst to him, his love for the world of manga began and continued to grow from that moment on. It was his love for the world of manga that made Akira determined to become a mangaka.
The beginning of Akira's foray into the world of manga, he wanted to create a manga with a comedy genre. He had no intention at all to create a shounen battle genre manga.
Before achieving great success with DRAGON BALL, Akira's works were rejected multiple times by publishers. In fact, he once drew over 500 sheets of manga stories which were then rejected outright.
Akira's first success was achieved after publishing DR.SLUMP in 1980.
According to the website Comic Book Resources, Akira ranked third as the richest mangaka in 2023. His total wealth is estimated to reach around $55 million, equivalent to more than Rp 855 billion.
Just announced officially by Bird Studio that Akira has passed away on March 1, 2024 due to acute subdural hematoma.
