Jeff Smith Officially Sentenced to 5 Months in Prison, Aisyah Aqilah Cries

Kapanlagi.com - The drug case trial against defendant Jeff Smith has reached its final stage. The West Jakarta District Court judges sentenced the 23-year-old man to 5 months in prison.

"Declares that Jeff Smith is legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing a crime of abusing category 1 narcotics for himself," said the chief judge in the courtroom, Wednesday (8/9).

"Determines that the defendant's detention period is fully deducted from the imposed sentence," the judge continued.

Hearing the verdict, Areistiani and Aisyah Aqilah, who were present at the trial, could not hold back their sadness. In fact, Aisyah Aqilah was seen shedding tears after the judge hammered his decision. Areistiani, Jeff Smith's mother, appeared to calm her son's girlfriend.

The verdict is lighter than the demand of the Public Prosecutor who wanted Jeff Smith to be sentenced to six months in prison and/or six months of rehabilitation for drug abuse.

1. There is Something That Aggravates

Previously, it was known that there was also one point that aggravated Jeff Smith's punishment. Aisyah Aqilah's lover did not support the government's efforts to eradicate drugs by consuming marijuana.

"What aggravates the defendant's actions is not supporting the Indonesian government's efforts in drug eradication," said the prosecutor at the West Jakarta District Court.

Meanwhile, there are several points that mitigate the situation. One of them is Jeff Smith's effort to rehabilitate himself voluntarily and admit his mistakes.

"Mitigating factors include the defendant not having been previously punished, the defendant behaving politely in the trial, and the defendant admitting his actions," he said.
