Keenan Nasution Acknowledges He Once Helped Vidi Aldiano: In 2008 No One Knew Who He Was

The dispute between Keenan Nasution and Vidi Aldiano did not only stop at the issue of copyright infringement. Keenan also revealed an offer of money amounting to Rp50 million that he did not accept because he felt it was not just about the nominal amount.

"I’m not really about the 50 million, please note that. I just want to know where this person has been all this time," said Keenan in the Fatmawati area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (6/3/2025).

Keenan believes that there has been no transparency from Vidi Aldiano regarding the use of his song. He mentioned routine reports on commercial utilization such as personalized ringtones (RBT) that he had received before.

"If RBT is like that, there should be a report every month, but now there isn't," he said.

He reminisced about the early days of his acquaintance with Vidi in 2008. At that time, Keenan even helped Vidi perform on a prestigious music stage, even though the young musician was not yet known to the public.

"In 2008, what was Vidi, I helped him sing at Java Jazz, well if I tell more it gets sadder," he said.

According to Keenan, Vidi Aldiano at that time was still unfamiliar to the ears of music lovers in the country. This made him feel he had a role in the early journey of Vidi's career.

"In 2008, who knew him, no one knew who he was," he said.

Reuniting with Vidi in 2024 became an important moment for Keenan to reassess his rights as a songwriter. He admitted that he only recently understood the rules surrounding copyright due to information from the government.

"The meeting in 2024, I just started following, oh, so this is how it is. I just want to know, actually, I read about copyright because of the government," said Keenan.

Keenan revealed that based on the latest regulations, songs that are over 25 years old must have their rights returned to the creator. In that context, he believes there needs to be a new contract and a clear royalty mechanism.

"That song which has been around for 25 years must return to the creator and there must be a new contract and royalties," emphasized Keenan.

As a songwriter, Keenan has always felt he doesn't know enough about the rights he can claim. "Well, I have been creating songs just like that, not knowing about things like this," he said.
