Kunto Aji Invites Musicians Not to Be Afraid to Speak Up, Says Government Always Changes

Musician Kunto Aji also shares his views regarding the demonstrations that have occurred in recent days in several areas, including Jakarta. He believes this phenomenon reminds him of the events in Bekasi, which showed the bravery of local residents in confronting groups of unclear origins.

"Just trust like what happened in Bekasi, the pure community, the local people, driving away groups of masses whose origins are unknown," said Kunto Aji when met at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Monday (1/9/2025).

According to the singer of Rehat, citizens now have the task of protecting their city from the arrival of groups of unknown origin. He feels that this condition is quite concerning.

"So, now our task is actually to defend our city from masses whose origins we do not know. It's quite unfortunate if we feel regret or if it's unclear, it's very regrettable," he said.

When asked about the reason he joined in voicing the concerns, Kunto Aji explained that the public has long felt weary of the attitudes of officials. He believes many officials speak without consequences, ultimately triggering an explosion of public emotions.

"The concerns have indeed been mounting, so to speak. We have all felt it for years, as I mentioned earlier, that officials can say anything without facing any consequences, as if to say, 'Well, I can do this, what can you do?'" he said.

"That is the gesture we have experienced over the years. So, it exploded, it exploded at the moment from the 25th yesterday, so yes, that's it," he added.

On this occasion, Kunto Aji also responded to the issue of inactive DPR members, including from among artists. He believes this issue should be taken more seriously by the party.

"Earlier I also just found out about the inactive issue that it turns out there is actually nothing, and everything else. Well, our hope is clear, our demands for replacement, removal, if possible maybe the party should take the initiative and make improvements so yes, that's a language issue, I’ll just follow the news first to see how it goes," he said.

The 37-year-old musician also lamented that there are still fellow professionals who hesitate to use their platform to speak out. He reminded that public figures do not need to fear losing their careers if they speak for the truth.

"Yes, that’s my concern too, there are some who I see are still afraid, actually we won’t lose our jobs, we won’t lose our listeners, we won’t lose anything, the government always changes anyway, so don’t be afraid, especially when you are on the right side," he said.

"In my opinion, public figures, especially in the arts, we create with a moral compass, I mean, how can that not be moved? I think it’s important, definitely important to speak out," he added.

Lastly, Kunto Aji admitted that he does not rule out the possibility of taking to the streets if the situation allows. He emphasized that every step must be measured.

"I see the condition because I want to go, I really want to go since yesterday, but I always update the situation as it is, in the field we want to voice that we must be measured, but whether I will go down later," he concluded.
