Utada Hikaru has just announced that they are non-binary, meaning they do not identify as male or female. The Japanese singer made this announcement on Instagram.
Explicitly, Utada expressed discomfort being called Miss or Mrs. They do not like to be associated with any specific gender or be addressed based on their marital status.
"Every time, it feels like I am forced to identify myself. I want there to be alternative options that can be used by anyone of any gender or social status. After writing all this, I searched and found that Mx (pronounced as 'mix') is suggested to be used. I think this is amazing, and I hope it can be used more. I am worried that my idea for a neutral term came too late," they said.
