Portrait of Luna Maya and Maxime Bouttier's Ablution Ceremony Before Their Wedding Becomes the Spotlight

Leading up to her wedding with Maxime Bouttier, Luna Maya held an ablution ceremony in Javanese tradition. This ablution process was also performed by Maxime at the same location as Luna, which is in Ubud, Bali, on Tuesday (6/5).

Among several series of the bathing ceremony, Luna Maya's way of performing ablution became a public highlight. The reason is that Luna did it in a different order than most Muslims in Indonesia.

Luna performed ablution by washing her hands, rinsing her mouth, then her face, wiping part of her head and ears, then washing both arms, and finally washing both of her feet.

Meanwhile, the sunnah of ablution according to the guidelines from the Ministry of Religious Affairs is as follows: Using a miswak, reciting the basmalah, washing both hands, rinsing the mouth 3 times, inhaling water into the nose (istinsyaq) 3 times, intending ablution in the heart while washing the face, washing the face 3 times, washing the hands up to the elbows 3 times, wiping part of the head with water 3 times, wiping the entire head, wiping both ears 3 times, washing both feet up to the ankles 3 times, facing the qibla, reciting the ablution prayer.

In addition to Luna's ablution method, Maxime Bouttier's way of performing ablution also drew attention. He started by washing his face, then wiped his head and ears, and continued by washing his feet. It seems Max forgot to wash both of his hands.

Nevertheless, netizens consider this to be a normal occurrence in such ceremonies. Besides the lack of water for ablution, feeling nervous during special moments often happens as well. Mistakes in the order of ablution, like those experienced by Luna and Maxime, are also commonly faced by other brides and grooms.

The ablution ceremony during the cleansing is not mandatory. However, it is usually performed if the bride or groom is Muslim, but if they follow another religion, this ceremony is typically done by simply pouring water from a jug over the bride or groom's body without interruption until it runs out.
