Qibil The Changcuters Apparently Once Had a Rival Band Project to Peterpan

Who would have thought that a band as big as The Changcuters initially had no long-term plans to become a professional band. When they first formed in college, the members thought this band would only be a pastime and would end along with their graduation.

Tria reminisces about the final days of college when each member already had their own life plans. In fact, the guitarist, Qibil, was known to have another music project that was considered very promising and was said to potentially be a strong competitor against the band Peterpan at that time. Here are the details.

"Qibil was actually working on a project to create a band that could potentially threaten Peterpan at that time if the band didn’t succeed. Seriously, the songs were really good," said Tria when met in the Panglima Polim area, South Jakarta, Wednesday (8/4/2026).

Not only Qibil, the bassist and also the manager, Dipa, also already has career plans in the media world in Jakarta. This situation made The Changcuters' future hang in the balance before they finally decided to seriously pursue this band.

"At that time, Dipa was already waiting to finish college and after that they all had their own plans. Dipa was like 'Yeah, I think I want to work in Jakarta in media' right?" said Tria.

At that time, their four years together in college became the main reason why they finally tried to form a band. Starting from daily conversations about music, they eventually agreed to try something they had never done seriously before.

"We kept hanging out together and mostly talked about music. But we never formed a band. Then finally, 'Okay, let's just form a band,'" he said again.

However, fate had other plans, the band that was initially just seen as a pastime actually exploded in the market. The vision that was once short has now turned into a long journey that has already reached over two decades.

"And we thought like 'Okay, we'll probably just make a band until we graduate from college and then this band will disband.' But thank God, here we are now," he concluded.
