Rano Karno Remembers Ray Sahetapy: A Serious Actor Who Did Not Want His Character Disturbed

Actor and Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, was present at the funeral of Ray Sahetapy at TPU Tanah Kusir, South Jakarta, on Friday (4/4/2025). Rano came to pay his last respects to his friend, a fellow senior actor who passed away on April 1, 2025.

Rano Karno stated that he had known Ray Sahetapy since the 1980s. They had worked together on several film projects, including one of the most memorable, Opera Jakarta.

"I have known Ray for quite a long time, maybe since the 80s. We acted together a few times. The most memorable for me was Opera Jakarta, where I was the antagonist alongside Mas Ray," said Rano Karno when met at TPU Tanah Kusir, South Jakarta, on Friday (4/4/2025).

According to Rano, Ray is known as an actor who deeply immerses himself in his roles. He does not want his character to be disturbed during the shooting process because he wants to fully deliver in every scene."It means that Ray is indeed an actor whose character is somewhat different, he is serious. Every script is read, and he doesn't want his character to be disturbed. We mourn, but one by one we will go home," said Rano.

Rano last met Ray about two years ago. At that time, Ray was already in poor health and appeared to have wounds on his legs due to complications from diabetes."It’s been a long time, maybe 2 years ago, coincidentally we had a gathering called Senior. Senior artists, like Roy Marten, Deddy Mizwar including Bang Ray," recalled Rano.

"At that time he came to the house already sick, diabetes you know. His legs were also a bit wounded. At that time we said be careful Ray, that was 2 years ago," he added.

Throughout their careers, Ray and Rano were brought together several times on film projects. However, after the film industry underwent changes entering the 1990s, their meetings became rare.

"Many, honestly the most memorable was acting together. After the 90s film era somewhat ended and we moved to television, we rarely met," said Rano reminiscing about their moments together.

As a colleague, Rano considers Ray to be a highly dedicated actor. For Rano, Ray is a performer who takes his role seriously, even among the most committed in shaping a character.

"Ray is a serious actor who studies the character he portrays quite thoroughly," concluded Rano.
