Surya Sahetapy Remembers the Last Moments with Ray Sahetapy: His Life Changed Since Hearing the Sad News

The departure of legendary actor Ray Sahetapy left a deep wound for his son, Surya Sahetapy. He received the sad news while he was in the United States, where he lives and teaches. Surya recounted the moments when he first received the news that his father was in critical condition.

"On the morning of April 1, which means it was night in Indonesia, at 9:33 I got a WhatsApp from Uncle, from Uncle Nody, saying that dad was critical. I was confused about whether to continue working at the campus or what to do, and I finally told my lecturer because there was an emergency situation," Surya said when met at Tanah Kusir Cemetery, South Jakarta, on Friday (4/4/2025).

Shortly after the first message, sad news came from his older brother. Surya admitted he was shocked and did not expect to lose his father so quickly, even though he had known about Ray's declining health for the past few years.

"And then Kak Merdi WhatsApped saying dad had passed away. So I felt like my life changed, felt weak, and (between) believing (and) not believing, (every) 30 minutes, every 20 minutes I cried because I already knew dad had been sick since 2017, so it had been quite a while, plus I had trauma with the health services in Indonesia," he said.

Although they had to live far apart for a while, Surya has many memories with Ray, including when he took care of his father before moving to America. Those moments became a strong emotional foundation for him to remember and continue his father's struggle."Yesterday I talked to my father; in 2017 I took care of him for 1.5 years before moving to America," said Surya.

Now, Surya, who is pursuing higher education in Rochester, New York, admits he is preparing to continue his PhD studies. He hopes to be an example for other deaf individuals in Indonesia to continue to excel in the academic world.

"Actually, I plan to continue my PhD; I want to show that deaf individuals can excel in the academic world. So, it’s an opportunity for deaf friends, and to be a role model for deaf friends in Indonesia," said Surya.

He revealed the hopes of his late father who wanted to establish a cinema or theater specifically for the deaf but still accessible to the general public."Alhamdulillah my father had a dream to have a cinema or theater specifically for the Deaf but watched by the general public," he said.

Surya mentioned that the deaf community in Rochester has already found a suitable place. This is his hope that Indonesia can also implement similar inclusivity.

"I am fortunate because I live in Rochester, in New York, which is quite close to Canada. A total of 70 thousand deaf people live there, and hearing people are already used to meeting deaf individuals in restaurants and communicating normally," said Surya.

He teaches sign language linguistics, culture, and the history of the deaf at the university where he works. Surya hopes that the Indonesian education system can be more open to disability inclusion.

"Hopefully Indonesia can start to be like that because there is a sign language course in Indonesia, but there is only one university that offers it. Hopefully, the human resources in Indonesia can increase even more," he concluded.
