The departure of legendary actor Ray Sahetapy left a deep wound for his son, Surya Sahetapy. He received the sad news while he was in the United States, where he lives and teaches. Surya recounted the moments when he first received the news that his father was in critical condition.
"On the morning of April 1, which means it was night in Indonesia, at 9:33 I got a WhatsApp from Uncle, from Uncle Nody, saying that dad was critical. I was confused about whether to continue working at the campus or what to do, and I finally told my lecturer because there was an emergency situation," Surya said when met at Tanah Kusir Cemetery, South Jakarta, on Friday (4/4/2025).
Shortly after the first message, sad news came from his older brother. Surya admitted he was shocked and did not expect to lose his father so quickly, even though he had known about Ray's declining health for the past few years.
"And then Kak Merdi WhatsApped saying dad had passed away. So I felt like my life changed, felt weak, and (between) believing (and) not believing, (every) 30 minutes, every 20 minutes I cried because I already knew dad had been sick since 2017, so it had been quite a while, plus I had trauma with the health services in Indonesia," he said.
