The Case of Ardhito Pramono Suing Sony Music for IDR 5.7 Billion

The singer Ardhito Pramono has officially filed a lawsuit for breach of contract against his former record label, Sony Music Entertainment Indonesia. This lawsuit has been registered at the Central Jakarta District Court due to allegations of contract violations.

Ardhito feels aggrieved because his songs have been used abroad without his written permission as the creator. This issue has escalated due to alleged royalty funds that have been intentionally withheld by the label for the past few years.

"We have already conducted (the legal standing examination), but unfortunately the defendant did not bring the Articles of Association. They claimed it was being used for company purposes, so the judges postponed our hearing for 14 days," said Adityo when met at the Central Jakarta District Court on Thursday (28/08/2026).

Adityo Ramadhan as the legal representative, Ardhito Pramono explained that the main focus of this lawsuit is the issue of synchronization rights for his client's musical works. He mentioned that Ardhito's songs have appeared in various popular film programs and reality shows in South Korea."The lawsuit is for breach of contract. One, the use of Ardhito's songs in South Korea. Secondly, there is money belonging to Ardhito that is being withheld by the label. The use of his works in films and reality shows is regulated under the Copyright Act, known as Synchronization Rights. It cannot be used without permission from Sony or Ardhito," explained Adityo.

The Ardhito side found discrepancies in the information regarding the agency that collects royalties from the use of songs in South Korea. Although the label claimed to have gone through WAMI, the response letter from the related agency provided a different statement."According to Sony's statement, it is collected by WAMI. However, we have inquired via letter and WAMI responded that they have never granted synchronization rights or collected money from the use of Ardhito's songs in Korea," said Adityo.

Some hit songs that are being questioned in this lawsuit include 'Fine Today', 'Bitterlove', and '9 to 5'. In addition, there is a fund of Rp705 million that has been unilaterally withheld by the label during the period of 2022-2025.

"Based on the clarification letter from Sony Music, there is Rp705 million. Sony said they would withhold Ardhito's royalty distribution until now (period 2022-2025). And Ardhito has never been informed how much has been withheld. The total we are suing for is Rp5.7 billion," said Adityo.

Before finally taking legal action in court, Ardhito had tried to send a warning letter three times to Sony Music. However, because no agreement was reached, the hearing will continue on September 10 to complete the administrative documents.
