The New King of the Solo Palace, Paku Buwono XIV: A Gen Z Leader Continuing the Mataram Tradition

The Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace officially has a new king following the passing of Sri Susuhunan Paku Buwono XIII on November 2, 2025. The crown prince Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya (KGPAA) Hamangkunegoro Sudibya Rajaputra Narendra Mataram has now ascended the throne with the title Paku Buwono XIV (PB XIV). This coronation marks a new chapter in the long history of the Solo Palace, now led by a figure from Generation Z.

PB XIV was born in Surakarta on September 26, 2002. At just 23 years old, he became one of the youngest leaders in the history of Javanese kingdoms.

In terms of education, PB XIV is known for his achievements. He completed his primary education in Surakarta, continued to Semesta Bilingual Boarding School Semarang for junior high and high school, and then pursued a bachelor's degree at the Faculty of Law, Diponegoro University (Undip). He is now registered as a master's program student at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta.

In addition to being academically intelligent, PB XIV is also known for his close relationship with nature and culture. Since the age of two, he has been taken hiking by his father, Paku Buwono XIII. He is also active in preserving the art of wayang orang and gamelan, two important cultural heritages of Java.

The coronation of PB XIV was held on November 5, 2025, at the Surakarta Palace complex. The traditional ceremony was conducted simply yet solemnly, attended by the extended royal family, palace servants, and community leaders of Solo.

However, the process of crowning the new king was not without internal dynamics. Another member of the royal family, Kanjeng Gusti Panembahan Tedjowulan, claimed to be the acting (Plt) king and suggested that a definitive appointment should be made after the period of traditional silence concluded. Nevertheless, the confirmation of PB XIV received strong support from the majority of the royal family and palace servants of Kasunanan.

As a young king, PB XIV faces significant challenges: maintaining the dignity of the Solo Palace amidst the digital era and cultural modernization.

PB XIV is also known to have a good relationship with Mangkunegara X, Gusti Bhre, who is also a young king at the Pura Mangkunegaran in Solo. Now Solo has two young leaders in Kasunanan and Mangkunegaran.
