The Touching Story of Caroline Accompanying Hotma Sitompul Until His Last Breath

Behind the figure of the seasoned lawyer Hotma Sitompul, lies a long struggle against an illness that drained the physical and emotional strength of the family. Caroline, Hotma's daughter-in-law, reveals the final moments of her father-in-law who passed away after undergoing intensive treatment for more than a year.

"Yes, it might also be said that Papa had kidney failure since January last year, so many were shocked by Papa's passing. For us as a family, we have seen a fairly long process from Papa. Since last January, Papa has started dialysis treatment, and in October, he had a drop in condition, so we flew him from Jakarta to Penang by plane," said Caroline after Hotma Sitompul's funeral at San Diego Hills Memorial Park, Karawang, Saturday (19/4/2025).

Hotma's condition was critical, leading to a 40-day coma in the ICU. During that time, the family took turns keeping watch at the hospital in Penang, Malaysia, until he was finally given a second chance to recover and return to Jakarta.

"Yes, we were in a coma for 40 days in the ICU, unconscious. Our family took turns taking care of Dad until he was given a second chance, and we believe that was a miracle. On January 2nd, we were able to bring Dad back to Jakarta," Caroline continued.

Upon returning to the homeland, Hotma lived with his family until his health condition began to decline again. A week before his passing, he was rushed to RSCM due to a lung infection.

"Yes, until yesterday at RSCM, Papa was admitted to the emergency room a week ago due to a lung infection and was referred to RSCM. Until his last breath, we could hold Papa's hand, our whole family, Kak Piter, we had a chance to pray together until Papa left," said Caroline with teary eyes.

Caroline reminisced about the warm moments with her father-in-law, from having breakfast together to the moments when Hotma cooked her favorite food.

"Yes, Papa really loved to joke with me, so every morning we would definitely have breakfast together, maybe Papa would tell me but not always with Papa," she recalled.
