From Celebrations to the Big Stage, Suliyana is dubbed the Diva of Banyuwangi - Bringing Elegance to Dangdut and Campursari

Suliyana has made history in the Indonesian music industry, one of which is through her performance of the song Cundamani that skyrocketed on YouTube, garnering over 12 million viewers.

The song, originally popularized by Denny Caknan, was successfully performed by Suliyana with a different and captivating orchestral music arrangement. Suliyana began her journey as a singer from the stages of events in Banyuwangi, before her name soared high. She admits that it all started from her junior high school days.

"My career journey began when I was in junior high school. When I participated in a band festival, that's where my entire career journey started," Suliyana told reporters.

Since then, her journey has opened up even more. She received a golden opportunity from a producer that led to her widespread recognition.

"Then there was a Banyuwangi song producer who gave me the chance to sing a song titled ALUM which made me known to the public through VCDs at that time," she said.

Thanks to her distinctive vocal ability and her talent for singing Osing language songs with varied arrangements, ranging from dangdut, acoustic pop, to orchestral Javanese pop, she is now dubbed the 'Diva of Banyuwangi' and 'Diva of Java'. The woman born on March 13, 1991, is grateful for the titles given to her.

"Alhamdulillah, I have been received very well, as have my works. I never expected that society would attach a nickname to me that I never imagined; it can be said that it is still very far from what I was dubbed. I am still in the process of learning, but I am grateful that my work is in the hearts of the people," said Suliyana.

1. The Shiniest Moment

One of the shiniest moments in her career was when she performed the song "Cundamani" by Denny Caknan, which went viral instantly. She never expected that the song would have such a significant impact.

"I am grateful that my work this time has achieved extraordinary success; everything I do and carry out, I surrender to God. I just try to be the best version of myself," said Suliyana.

Suliyana's performances always look perfect, especially thanks to her collaboration with SLY GLAM Orchestra, which presents fresh and elegant arrangements of dangdut and campursari music. The creative process behind the fusion of dangdut and campursari with orchestral touches started from a very quick process, but it yielded extraordinary results.

"It started from a fast and extraordinary process, but from this quick process, everything was refined and became more mature and solid. All of this is the result of the thoughts and hearts of my Glam team. I am actually a perfectionist when working on something, including in music. As I expressed while creating with Glam Orchestra, I poured out what was in my mind, and the Glam Orchestra team executed it," she said.

2. Luxurious Costumes Become an Identity

Not only a melodious voice, Suliyana's stage appearance is also known to be flamboyant, elegant, and always supported by luxurious costumes. For her, fashion is an important part that is inseparable from her identity as an artist.

"Of course, fashion is my soul, because looking beautiful is a satisfaction of the heart. Looking beautiful and fashion is life for me. They all must go hand in hand to support the appearance of a singer," she said.

Suliyana herself has ancestry from Kalimantan and Solo, but she grew up and built her career in Banyuwangi. This cultural acculturation is very valuable to Suliyana.

"The cultural acculturation that I have experienced in my life is very precious, this cultural mix has also become one of the foundations of how I can become a Suliyana who is widely known by the public today. With this diverse cultural mix, I am able to harmonize everything very well," she said.

3. Awards & Future Plans

Recently, Suliyana successfully received an award as the Most Popular Banyuwangi Singer at the Banyuwangi Ghending Osing Festival 2023 and also as a Senior Gending Osing Artist. This award means a lot to her.

"This award is very meaningful to me; the Osing song is my lifeblood. I live, walk, and grow, it is the Osing song that has brought me to where I am now," she said.

Suliyana has performed various popular songs such as Wedi Karo Bojomu, Mendem Kangen, and Oplosan. For Suliyana, those songs bring back many memories. Currently, the selection of songs she will perform again must align with the orchestral concept she is promoting.

"The singles above have many memories, hahaha, those songs were my hit singles 15 years ago. For now, the selection of songs I will perform again must clearly be songs that can fit with my orchestral concept because not all songs can be performed again; I think it depends more on the soul of the song, whether the music and the song can match," explained Suliyana.

Although she has succeeded with her groundbreaking music infused with orchestral and jazz elements, Suliyana admits that she will always seek new things.

"Of course, because I am someone who likes to explore things, heheh, so just wait for surprises from me," concluded Suliyana.
