Rhoma Irama Donates Rp 100 Million to LMK Dangdut, Concerned About Musicians' Dropping Royalties

Legendary dangdut singer Rhoma Irama revealed the reason behind his decision to donate Rp 100 million of his personal funds to the rights holders at the Collective Management Institution (LMK) for dangdut music. This step was taken as a form of empathy for the plummeting royalties received by musicians.

This issue arose after several LMK related to creation and rights, such as RAI, ARDI, WAMI, and Transparency of Royalties Indonesia (TRI), questioned the royalty management system by the National Collective Management Institution (LMKN). They believe there is an imbalance that directly impacts the welfare of musicians.

In this situation, the rights holders are reported to be experiencing a drastic decline in income. For example, in one year, the total royalties received by ARDI members only reached Rp 25 million for about 300 people.

Rhoma assesses that one of the root problems stems from the lack of clarity in the legal basis used in the new LMKN system. He mentioned that this condition has caused turmoil among music industry players.

"This is what causes the turmoil because there is no reference from the law. It does not refer to the law. In my opinion, this is the problem of the turmoil, causing it to be noisy, because some are not receiving their rights at all," said Rhoma Irama when met in Depok, Tuesday (7/4).

According to Rhoma, the main issue currently lies with related rights, not copyright. He emphasized that the initial distribution of copyright has been ongoing, while related rights are facing serious obstacles.

"There is an issue that Bang Rhoma Irama received IDR 1.5 billion. Eh, that money is for copyright, not for Rhoma Irama. It is for the friends of the creators. Now, this is the related rights that are problematic right now," emphasized Rhoma.

"For related rights, not the creator, these related rights are greatly affected. They usually receive Rp 1.5 billion per period. Well, yesterday they only got Rp 25 million. How do you distribute that?" asked Rhoma.

Seeing the situation, Rhoma admitted to having a moral responsibility as the General Chair of the Indonesian Malay-Dangdut Music Artists Association (PAMMDI). He decided to step in to help the affected members.

The concrete step taken is to donate personal funds amounting to Rp 100 million. This fund is intended to assist copyright holders who are currently in difficulty, especially ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

"Yes, it's just a sense of empathy. Empathy that whatever happens, I am the leader. I am the general chair. So it's just a feeling of concern. I leave it to the PAMDI management to distribute it," concluded Rhoma Irama.
