Stop Sinning with Usury, Check Out the Right Repentance Tips from UAH and UAS!

The term usury refers to the practice of earning additional profit in buying and selling transactions or interest in borrowing and lending money. In the Qur'an, Allah explicitly forbids this practice and even gives a stern warning to anyone involved in it.

In QS. Surah Al-Baqarah verse 275, Allah says: "Allah has made trade lawful and prohibited usury. Those who have received the prohibition from their Lord and then refrain (from taking usury), for them is what they had taken before (the prohibition came) and their affair is (up to) Allah. And whoever returns (to taking usury), then they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."

From this verse, it is very clear that Allah greatly despises usury and emphasizes the severe consequences for its perpetrators. So, for those who wish to repent and hope that their usury sins will be forgiven by Allah SWT, what steps should be taken? Let us follow the explanation below to find the path to forgiveness and His pleasure.

1. Repent Sincerely

In an interesting interview, Ustadz Adi Hidayat explained that even if someone has been trapped in the sin of usury for decades, Allah SWT still opens the door of forgiveness through sincere repentance.

He emphasized that to obtain that forgiveness, one must truly regret their actions and be determined not to repeat them. However, the question arises: how can one purify wealth that comes from usury? And can the profits obtained from usury become an obstacle in the process of repentance?

2. How to Purify Usury Wealth

If there is still leftover wealth from usury, it is better to utilize it for good, such as building public facilities that benefit the community, like wells, public toilets, roads, or mosques.

Ustadz Adi Hidayat emphasized that by repenting and directing the leftover usury wealth for charity, Allah SWT will forgive the principal amount of our wealth and forget the past mistakes. "The most important thing is to improve life with repentance and good deeds. Be diligent in giving charity and donations," he said.

If we have become accustomed to doing good deeds, it is a sign that our sins have been forgiven by Allah. When a servant repents, Allah will surely not harm or make them suffer.

3. The Law of Charity from Usury Wealth

Ustadz Abdul Somad recently expressed his views on the law of charity from usury wealth, which has attracted the attention of many people. He emphasized that the interest earned from savings in conventional banks is haram and should not be used.

So, where should this money be channeled? In his explanation, UAS referred to Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who suggested that bank interest be given to institutions that benefit society, such as nursing homes, orphanages, pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), and mosques.
