Rupert Grint, Star of Harry Potter, Must Pay 36 Billion Rupiah Tax After Losing Dispute

Actor Rupert Grint, known for playing Ron Weasley in the eight Harry Potter films, has been ordered to pay a tax of £1.8 million or around 36.2 billion after losing a legal dispute with the UK tax authority HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

According to BBC reports, Rupert is required to pay this amount because HMRC found discrepancies in his tax return from 2019.

Rupert Grint's lawyer filed an appeal on the grounds that the money received from his company is a capital asset that should be taxed at a lower rate of 10 percent.

HMRC argues that the money is income and is taxed at a much higher rate of 52 percent.

Rupert Grint received £4.5 million or 90.6 billion rupiah between 2011 and 2012 from his company, in which he is the sole shareholder.

The funds were referred to as 'bonuses from residual income from the Harry Potter films.' However, Judge Harriet Morgan rejected Rupert Grint's appeal and stated that the funds were 'largely derived from Grint's activities.'

Therefore, the funds must be considered as income, not as capital assets. Because of this, Grint is required to pay taxes amounting to Rp 36.2 billion.

It was previously known that Rupert Grint faced a loss in another tax case. He had to pay 1 million pounds or 20 billion rupiah related to tax returns.
