Frislly Herlind Reveals Challenges of Using Javanese to Malay in 'SAJEN SATU SURO'

Actress Frislly Herlind faces her own challenges while portraying the character Laura in SAJEN SATU SURO. As a village resident interacting with characters from various regions, Laura must adjust her language use according to her conversation partner so that each scene feels natural.

Frislly admitted that she had discussions with the director regarding language use in the film. According to her, switching languages without a foundation will feel awkward when presented on screen.

"It's exciting. Actually, I can spill a little, at that time I offered it to the director. In my opinion, there is a gap if we end up switching languages. From a linguistic standpoint, switching will feel like a jump when aired," said Frislly Herlind when met at XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, Tuesday (14/7/2026).

As a solution, Frislly proposed that Laura maintain her identity as a village girl. However, her way of speaking should be adjusted to the character she is communicating with.

"So I managed it by having Laura remain herself. When she meets her parents, she uses Javanese. When she meets characters from Jakarta who use the city dialect, Laura tries to use the city languages," she explained.

Not only that, Laura also interacts with Dela, a character from Malaysia. In that scene, Frislly adjusts the dialogue by using a bit of Malay so that the communication between the characters feels more natural.

"But when meeting Dela, Laura also tries to use the language that Dela understands, which is by using a bit of Malay," said Frislly.
