After decades of building a career in the film industry, ANAK MEDAN: COCOK KO RASA? is the first film by Ivan Bandhito to be screened in Indonesian cinemas. The director stated that in the process of making this film, not much adjustment was needed regarding the twists and turns of creating and building chemistry with the cast.
"Throughout my career (as a director), I have traveled around Indonesia making films with all kinds of cultural issues and social structure problems. So, when I entered (the film) ANAK MEDAN, it wasn't too difficult (to adjust). Coincidentally, I also have roots from North Sumatra." Ivan Bandhito expressed during a press conference on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Agustinus Sitorus, producer of PIM Pictures, stated that the main purpose of making the film ANAK MEDAN: COCOK KO RASA? with Ivan Bandhito is to bring the Indonesian community closer to the culture and social situation of the people of Medan. According to them, it is still very rare for the national film industry to highlight and introduce this, especially regarding the dynamics of friendship itself. Both agreed they want to show how interesting this aspect is so that it becomes widely known.
To be able to capture the beauty of Medan well, the director behind this film reportedly had to conduct research for a week in the city located in North Sumatra, even though he still has blood ties with its people. "I studied and observed (the culture and social elements), including phrases that might sound harsh to outsiders, whereas (originally) they are forms (that show the existence of) friendship aja. Nah, it became an icon for me because young people tuh often ngomong like that, so that became one of the things I thought should nempel sama Ucok." He said while attending a press conference event at XXI Epicentrum Walk, South Jakarta.

The film ANAK MEDAN: COCOK KO RASA? is not only special for the director but also a remarkable project for Stevan Pasaribu and Maria Simorangkir. The singer of the song Belum Siap Kehilangan expressed that he is very happy and feels that portraying a character as himself is the biggest challenge he has to face.
Unlike Stevan, Maria feels the challenge comes from embodying the character of an older sister to the character Ucok. "Actually, Kak Sondang is a character that is similar to me, but (my true identity and the character played) must have differences, right? Moreover, Kak Sondang has a younger sibling and a mother, (so) it’s just the three of them. (The part) of having to take care of her family is what is actually difficult." Said the singer from Indonesian Idol 9.

One of the storylines presented in the film set mainly in Medan tells the story of the main star named Ucok who intends to change his fate by migrating to Jakarta. The moment turning point for the character played by Maell Lee leaves a lasting emotional scene for him. He feels very relate to the actions taken by the character of the actor.
"That’s my real experience, because I am from Medan and migrated to Jakarta, I had to ask for permission from my mom. It was almost like that tuh dialogue (in the part) asking for forgiveness, asking for permission, (and) I bowed in front of my mom." He said.

Once upon a time, there was a friendship group consisting of four people named Ucok, Rafly, Joko, and Chisa who wanted to realize their dreams towards the path of success after graduating from high school. However, an unfortunate event befell Rafly (Ajil Ditto) which forced him to distance himself from his three close friends, as per his parents' request.
As time went by, Ucok (Maell Lee), who still couldn't forgive himself for the tragedy, became increasingly frustrated after being rejected from a singing talent search. On the other hand, Joko (Ady Sky) was one step closer to his dream of becoming a player on the beloved city football team. Chisa (Mario Maulana) was also just waiting for the time to leave for further education in the neighboring country, Singapore.
Not wanting to easily give up on his dream of becoming a singer, the idea of migrating to Jakarta suddenly came to Ucok's mind. He truly left his family and friends in Medan in pursuit of a better life and to achieve his dream. The journey of the youngest child in the Pardede family in searching for money began, along with the life challenges of each of his friends that eventually brought the four of them back together.
