Junior Roberts will play the lead role in the latest Indonesian romantic-comedy film titled ALGRAFI, which will be released on Monday, June 24, 2024. This is the first time he has been involved in a comedy genre film, and as the main character as Algra, Junior Roberts faces new challenges in his role.

“I usually play cool, indifferent characters. But for this (film), the challenge is that I have to be expressive, I have to be able to portray expressions, it has to be more fun, because the film also has comedic elements,” said Junior Roberts during a press conference and press screening held in Kemang, South Jakarta on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

“I'm actually shy, very different from the character Algrafi,” Junior Roberts continued. The press conference was also attended by Slamet Rahardjo who plays eyang and Avijit Dutta as the head of Viu Indonesia.

This film is set in modern times and tells the story of Algrafi (Junior Roberts) who is forced to return to Indonesia after experiencing a failure in his education in the United States. Despite coming from a very wealthy family, Algrafi does not have the freedom to choose his own partner due to an unexpected arranged marriage planned by his grandfather, Slamet Rahardjo.

This arranged marriage leads Algrafi to be reunited with Naya (Megan Domani), his childhood friend who is also 17 years old. Unlike Algrafi, Naya comes from a financially disadvantaged family. The differences in background and character make them willing to do various ways to thwart the arranged marriage.

However, in the midst of their struggle to avoid the forced marriage, the relationship between Algrafi and Naya develops from hatred to love, taking them through adventures full of surprises. This film also presents the problems faced by teenagers as they enter the transition phase to adulthood, where Algrafi must confront the conflicting expectations of his parents with his own personal dreams, while Naya has to face the economic limitations of her family in pursuing her future dreams.

With complex conflicts and strong character growth, ALGRAFI offers a touching story, highlighting the social and emotional nuances of teenage experiences caught between tradition and modernity in Indonesia.

In general, the film that will be exclusively released by Viu for the Viu Premium Plus program tells the story of Algra and Naya, childhood friends, who directly reject their arranged marriage. Although initially hating each other, their relationship develops into an alliance to thwart the arranged marriage plan. Toha Essa, as the Head of Content at Viu, revealed that the story of ALGRAFI brings a modern perspective to the common tradition of arranged marriages in Indonesia.

“With an interesting story and leading stars, this film is expected to not only entertain but also stimulate discussions about friendship and the consequences of arranged marriages, just like our previous Viu Original, Private Bodyguard, which addressed the important topic of bullying,” said Toha, referring to the series also starring Junior Roberts.

However, the film ALGRAFI directed by Rully Manna is interspersed with comedic scenes that make the love story between Algra and Naya not feel dull.

In a press conference and press screening held in Kemang, South Jakarta on Thursday, June 20, 2024, Junior Roberts briefly explained the character of Algra.

“Actually, he's easy going because he likes playing games, but he doesn't like being demanded, you know,” explained Junior Roberts. "So, actually he's still a bit childish, but he undergoes character development as shown in the film.” Junior Roberts hopes that the new acting he's doing will be accepted by the wider audience.

As for the character of Naya played by Megan Domani, she described Naya as a young teenager who is loveable, simple, and independent.

“She knows what she wants, you know. So she won't break down if she's asked to do something,” added Megan.

As a film adaptation of the novel of the same title by Dwi Berliana, which has been read 28 million times on Wattpad, Junior Roberts and Megan Domani hope that this film they are playing in can meet the expectations of the readers.
