Actress Nirina Zubir felt a heavy weight when offered to join the horror film CALL FROM THE GRAVE. This feeling arose after reading the script and finding a scene that was very touching as a mother.
"So there is an incident where basically that night no one else can bathe the corpse of her child except Alia, who is the mother of the child," said Nirina when met at the press conference for the film CALL FROM THE GRAVE held in the Kemang area, Jakarta on Monday (14/7/2025).
In the film directed by Dyan Sunu Prastowo, Nirina is entrusted to play the character of a mother named Alya. She has to undergo an emotional scene where Alya bathes her deceased daughter.
"Every time I was about to perform the scene, I would see in my head my daughter," she said.
Because the role was so close to her personal life, Nirina had asked for the scene to be removed. However, the production team insisted that she perform it directly for the strength of the story.
"Since the beginning of reading the script, I had indeed asked for that scene to be removed or replaced with a body double," explained Nirina.
Despite having doubts, Nirina ultimately accepted the challenge. She realized that the scene was an important part of the overall plot of the film that could not be replaced. "Moreover, that scene is indeed important to maintain the integrity of the storyline," she said.
As the shooting approached, Nirina admitted that she needed a long time to gather her courage. Fortunately, the weather was supportive and she had some extra time to calm herself. "After waiting for 1.5 hours, I still asked for almost 30 more minutes before I could finally do it," she said.
Although she has acted in many films, that scene became the toughest challenge of Nirina's acting career. She even admitted that she couldn't control her emotions during the process.
"And in between shots, in between takes, I was really speechless, shaking, crying non-stop. My mind was all over the place as a mother, but it was such a heavy scene," she said.
Nirina explains that this film is not just about ghosts, but also touches on the emotional side between parents and children. She feels that this story could be very relevant for many viewers.
"Because this is a mother and child relationship, and not just mother and child. Actually, for parents and children who are faced with the trials we are left with by our beloved children," she said.
The film CALL FROM THE GRAVE will be showing in theaters starting August 14, 2025. In addition to Nirina, this film also stars Nugie, Muthia Datau, Firzanah Alya, and Septian Dwi Cahyo.
