Nova Eliza & Callista Arum Dive Deep, Portray Mother & Child Tarot Readers in the Film 'MAMA: MESSAGE FROM HELL'

The latest horror film MAMA: MESSAGE FROM HELL is set to terrorize Indonesian cinemas starting September 11, 2025. Not only does it present a chilling story, but it also brings the mysterious world of tarot to the forefront of its conflict.

The two main stars, Nova Eliza and Callista Arum, are challenged to portray the characters of a mother and child who have a close relationship with the tarot cards. Of course, both must conduct in-depth research to ensure their performances appear convincing on camera.

Nova Eliza, who plays Mama Sari, a renowned tarot reader, admits to undertaking various special preparations. She not only learned from videos but was also directly guided by a tarot teacher who accompanied her on set.

"Actually, it's more about watching the methods like on YouTube, you know. Um, and then there's a teacher who really teaches from the beginning the basic methods that Mama Sari needs to master," Nova said when met in Kuningan, South Jakarta, Thursday (10/7/2025).

Although she had once playfully had her fortune told, Nova emphasized that she does not believe in predictions one hundred percent. For her, that experience is just for fun.

"I’ve done it, just for fun. Not believing it one hundred percent, no. If it's good, we keep it, if it's bad, we don't need to listen to it," she wisely stated.

Meanwhile, Callista Arum, who plays the role of the Princess, the daughter, also delves into the world of tarot. As the child of a fortune teller, her character is required to understand the basics of reading the cards.

"I was also taught how to shuffle and read tarot. Because since I was little, I’ve been training my mom to play tarot, so I can definitely do it too," explained Callista.

In addition to tarot, Callista also explained her character's main conflict. She plays a child who feels neglected by her super busy mother, not knowing that all of it is done for her own good.

"Because the older I got, the less my mom was at home, the busier she became, the more ambitious she was with her tarot. I started to feel like she was neglecting me as a child," she concluded.
