Raising the Issue of Domestic Violence, Alexzander Wlan Acknowledges His Role in the Film 'SAMAWA' Makes People Afraid to Get Married

Addressing the issue of Domestic Violence (KDRT), this film presents an emotional side that is rarely discussed in depth in Indonesian cinema.

This film showcases social realities that are often considered taboo to discuss. Director Ganank Dera explains that many social issues in society do not receive enough attention.

"Many social issues are actually happening around us, but they are not widely discussed because they are considered taboo or controversial," said Ganank at a press conference at XXI Senayan City, Friday (31/1/2025).

This film not only portrays the victims of domestic violence but also depicts the complexities behind the relationship between the perpetrators and the victims. Ganank emphasizes that this film is not a justification for domestic violence, but rather a reflection of the reality that needs to be understood more deeply.

"This film is not a justification for domestic violence, but an effort to reveal that this phenomenon exists and is more complicated than it appears on the surface. We fully leave the judgment to the audience," he explained.

1. Big Challenge

This film stars Badriyah Afiff as Yura and Alexzander Wlan as Andi. In addition to them, there are also Ence Bagus, Lulu Zakaria, Lucky L. Moniaga, Amel Alvi, and Decy Decinta.

Badriyah Afiff admits that the role of Yura is a big challenge for her. She learned a lot from the experiences of her close ones who have experienced domestic violence.

"This role is very different from what I usually play. It is a big challenge for me. I am very inspired by close people who have experienced domestic violence, which gives me a deep understanding," said Badriyah.

Meanwhile, Alexzander Wlan expressed his fear after delving into the character of Andi, a husband who commits violence against his wife. He admitted that he had to understand the psychological side of a domestic violence perpetrator to delve into his role.

"Honestly, after getting into this character of Andi, after trying to study the psychological side of his emotions, what his personality is like, this person really exists, yes, this Andi, and there are really people like this," said Alexzander.

He even admitted that this role made him reconsider marriage because he was afraid of becoming either a perpetrator or a victim of domestic violence.

"But to think twice about getting married, there is a bit of that," he said.

According to him, domestic violence is not only experienced by women but also by men. Unfortunately, cases of domestic violence experienced by men are often not exposed.

"Yes, because it’s not only men who can commit domestic violence; women can also commit domestic violence against men. Usually, the focus is more on domestic violence against women, while cases against men are rare, because it can also affect their mental health, it’s dangerous for both," he said.
