Ranty Maria Pinches Herself to Hold Back Laughter While Playing a Ghost in 'WARGA RUSUN 609'

Kapanlagi.com - Ranty Maria shared a unique experience while portraying a ghost named Bunga in the film WARGA RUSUN 609. On this horror-comedy set, she is required to maintain a scary expression amidst the often laugh-inducing shooting atmosphere.

Bunga is depicted as having an emotional side, reluctant to leave the apartment complex because she is waiting for a promise from Arka, a character played by Morgan Oey.

The biggest challenge for Ranty is not only delving into her emotions but also maintaining character consistency when humorous moments arise on set. Holding back laughter becomes an additional task every time the camera is rolling.

1. How Ranty Maria Holds Back Laughter on Set

Ranty admitted that she had to find a simple trick to stay focused on her character. When a scene required her to be silent as a ghost, she would hide her hands and pinch herself to keep from laughing.

"So just imagine on set, I even hurt myself. When taking a scene with the residents of the apartment, I just have to be silent, right? If my hands can hide somewhere, I pinch myself so I won't laugh," she said at a press conference at Plaza Senayan on Monday, (31/8/2026).

She explained that many scenes with the apartment residents required her to stay still. The method of pinching herself became a helper to maintain her expression when the atmosphere on set was funny.

2. Ghost Makeup That Must Last Long

Apart from acting, the transformation into Bunga also required a lengthy makeup process. Ranty mentioned that the makeup team went through a trial and error process to find a technique that would last throughout the shoot while also ensuring the makeup could be completely removed.

She often stayed inside the room to keep the makeup that took 2 hours to apply from melting. Occasionally, Ranty felt FOMO (fear of missing out) when she heard her friends outside having fun conversations, but she chose to stay in to maintain her ghostly appearance.

"I mostly stay inside because I'm afraid it will melt. But sometimes I feel like FOMO because they are having fun talking outside, so I think, 'they're talking, I want to go out.' Then every time I go out, people look at me like (surprised), and I ask, 'why? I'm surprised. I forgot that I've become a ghost,'" she said.
