Synopsis of 'THE SCIENCE OF FICTIONS', Siman's Effort to Convey a Secret

Kapanlagi.com - The film THE SCIENCE OF FICTIONS, directed by Yosep Anggi Noen, is one of the feature films that made it into the shortlist of the Indonesian Film Festival.

THE SCIENCE OF FICTIONS is a collaboration between several production houses, namely Angka Fortuna Sinema, KawanKawan Media, and Limaenam Films, with co-production from Andolfi (France), Astro Shaw (Malaysia), GoStudio (Indonesia), and Focused Equipment (Indonesia).

This film has been in development since 2013 and has been presented at the Asian Project Market 2013, Produire Au Sud 2016, Venice GAP Financing as part of the Venice Film Festival 2017, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. The project involves several renowned Indonesian actors and actresses such as Gunawan Maryanto, Yudi Ahmad Tajudin, Lukman Sardi, Ecky Lamoh, Alex Suhendra, Marissa Anita, Rusini, and Asmara Abigail.

1. Synopsis

THE SCIENCE OF FICTIONS tells the story of a young man named Siman, who lives in a remote area in Yogyakarta. He witnesses the filming of a foreign crew's moon landing in an uninhabited area in Gumuk Pasir, Bantul, in the 1960s. This causes the people who witnessed the filming to be hunted down, including Siman. Shortly after, Siman is captured and his tongue is cut off to prevent him from spreading the hoax of the moon landing.

As a result of these events, Siman lives his days in slow-motion, like an astronaut in space. It is his way of trying to communicate with the people around him. The situation worsens as Siman builds a rocket behind his house. So the villagers considered Siman crazy.

2. Achieving Various Nominations and Awards

This film managed to enter 10 nominations at the FFi event, including for the Best Feature Film category, Best Director, Best Male Lead Actor, Best Original Screenplay Writer, Best Supporting Male Actor, Best Art Director, Best Sound Designer, Best Costume Designer, Best Makeup Artist. Not only that, this film also managed to achieve various nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Direction, and Special Jury Prize from the Golden Leopard.

SCIENCE OF FICTIONS successfully brought home the Citra Trophy for Best Male Lead Actor. The victory was given to the actor Siman, Gunawan Maryanto. In his acceptance speech, Gunawan felt tricked by the director because he was given a role without any dialogue at all. In fact, this led Gunawan to win the Citra Trophy.
