'PENINSULA' Earns Rp. 308 Billion in Its Second Week of Release

This zombie action thriller film has surpassed several other films currently showing in South Korean cinemas. These films include several local South Korean films and some re-released films, such as ALADDIN. PENINSULA received an official invitation and was included in the 2020 Official Selection list at the Cannes Film Festival 2020. The Cannes Film Festival 2020 is an annual festival held in Cannes, France.

The sequel to the film TRAIN TO BUSAN earned Rp. 65 billion between Friday and Sunday. This data was obtained from 2,100 screenings. It experienced a 52% decrease compared to its first week of release, which earned Rp. 144 billion. In total, this zombie film has reached Rp. 308 billion since its initial release on July 15 by Next Entertainment World.

In addition to South Korea, the film PENINSULA has also been released in six other Asian countries' box offices, such as Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Mongolia. Even this film has achieved screening achievements in IMAX format. PENINSULA became the highest-grossing Korean-language film ever shown in IMAX format in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

After the reopening of cinemas in South Korea, PENINSULA became one of the most anticipated films. According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) data, the number of viewers reached 2,862,894 since the release of PENINSULA on July 15. This number is considered quite fantastic amidst the Covid-19 pandemic in recent months. This film is also scheduled to premiere in North America, Europe, and New Zealand in August.

Directed again by Yeon Sang Ho, the theme of this sequel is still the same, which is a zombie outbreak in South Korea. The difference is that in PENINSULA, the zombie outbreak is depicted to have infected the entire South Korea. The main cast in Peninsula is also no longer played by actor Gong Yoo. Instead, it is starred by Kang Dong Won, who has also starred in the successful film Secret Reunion.

PENINSULA tells the story four years after the events of TRAIN TO BUSAN. It is told that the entire Korean territory has been infected with a Zombie outbreak. The country's condition has also been devastated due to the chaos that occurred when zombies attacked the living. However, there is a young man named Jung Seok (Kang Dong Won) and some people who managed to survive and escape from Korea. One day, Jung Seok receives a mission from someone to return to Korea to retrieve something. Because he will be rewarded greatly, Jung Seok agrees and sets out to carry out the mission back to Korea with his companions. However, he and his companions encounter a group of people who want to use them as bait for the zombies. Will Jung Seok succeed? Or will he become a meal for the hungry zombies? Curious, right?
