'SHANG-CHI 2' Officially in the Works, Director and Marvel Studio Bosses Comment

Kapanlagi.com - Who hasn't watched SHANG-CHI, the latest Marvel hero released a few months ago. Titled SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, you can see the main hero Simu Liu in action. Well, even though it was just released a few months ago, SHANG-CHI 2 is already being planned.

As the director and writer of the film, Marvel Studios has appointed Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed the film JUST MERCY. And who would have thought that Marvel liked his work and he will be brought back to continue SHANG-CHI 2. Quoted from Deadline, Cretton has signed an exclusive contract that will last for several years with Marvel Studios and Onyx Hulu, both under the umbrella of Disney. Cretton is also developing an MCU series for Disney+ although no one knows what series it is yet.

Considering that SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS received positive responses and became the eighth highest-grossing film in 2021, it makes sense for Marvel Studios to immediately make a sequel to SHANG-CHI, and bring back Destin Daniel Cretton as the writer and director again.

In response to the success of Shang-Chi, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige commented on Cretton, "Destin is an incredible collaborator who brings a unique perspective and skillset to SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many exciting ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we're thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can't wait to get started."

In his official statement about his exclusive deal, Destin Daniel Cretton said that working on SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS was a "highlight" of his life, and he's excited to "explore new stories and build a new world with this community."

2. Crossover with Avengers Characters

The post-credit scene in SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS certainly hints at a sequel for this character in the MCU, responding to this, netizens assume that Shang-Chi will be assisted by some other heroes. In response to this, Destin Daniel Cretton told IGN that he does not want to direct a project equivalent to AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. He is much more interested in following this specific character and handling their journey rather than building the MCU as a whole.

“That's definitely not my expectation. I don't really aspire to one or the other. Once we get to the story we want to tell, that's when we determine how many characters will be included in that story. But I am especially excited to explore the characters more and their emotional journey, and see them grow and try to achieve something and fail, and see how they get out of the mud. That's what I enjoy the most. And I'm not sure how many characters we will introduce in the next film.”

3. Shang-Chi's Future

Instead of trying to be the director leading a big MCU film, it seems Destin Daniel Cretton happily focuses on this one character. This is not a bad thing considering the success of his first Marvel work.

In addition, Destin Daniel Cretton also said that he is already in the earliest stage of putting together the sequel. Cretton says that SHANG-CHI 2 is still open to all possibilities. It seems you have to be patient waiting for the sequel SHANG-CHI.
