Mama Gina and Appa Jay Kimbab Family Reveal Challenges of Being a Multicultural Family
Due to language limitations, Mama Gina couldn't even talk to her in-laws when she first lived in Korea.
Kapanlagi.com - The second day of the KapanLagi Korean Festival (26/7) was enlivened by the presence of a cross-country family, Indonesia-Korea, the Kimbab Family. Together with Suji, Yunji, and Jio, Mama Gina and Appa Jay greeted the online family who had been eagerly awaiting their arrival.
In every Kimbab Family vlog, the three adorable children Suji, Yunji, and Jio always attract attention. Because of their adorable behavior, many online families have become fans of them.
Being children from different cultural backgrounds, Suji, Yunji, and Jio were sometimes confused. There was an interesting moment that happened when they first returned to Korea after living in Indonesia for several years.
Mama Gina recounted that her three children had greeted their grandparents in Korea by kissing their hands when they first returned to their father's hometown. This is certainly not something commonly done in Korea.
"They were confused at first when they came to Korea, the children paid their respects to their grandparents in Korea by kissing their hands," she said.

Having parents from Indonesia and Korea, the Kimbab Family children also learn about both cultures. Even though they live in Korea, Mama Gina also tries to always introduce Indonesian culture to Suji, Yunji, and Jio.
"So, when we were in Indonesia, my task was just to remind them, because they have lived in Indonesia and know Indonesian culture. Usually, I tell them about what is in Indonesia, what it is like. We also have a lot of video calls with their grandparents in Bandung, so they don't forget. And Appa Jay explains to the children in Korea what it is like there. Then I also explain, so it goes together," she said.
The same goes for the language they use. Mama Gina and Appa Jay both encourage their three children to communicate in Indonesian and Korean. And because Mama Gina is from Sunda, she occasionally unintentionally uses the Sunda language.
"We use Indonesian language every day. As for the Sunda language, they haven't been taught, but sometimes I slip and they get used to it and know the meaning," said Mama Gina.
"I don't teach them Indonesian language, but I use it every day. So they are used to it and understand," she concluded.
