Previously, all WayV members were originally part of SM Rookies in Seoul, South Korea. Then in 2016, Ten NCT debuted as a member of NCT U. Later that same year, Winwin NCT debuted in the sub unit NCT 127.

Then at the end of 2016, SM Entertainment announced that NCT officially formed a sub unit called WayV with 7 members.
