In 2008, JYP Entertainment created a survival event to form a group called Hot Blood Men. Eventually, a group named One Day was formed, which was divided into two boy groups, namely 2AM and 2PM. JYP Entertainment also mentioned that they had their own focus division at that time. 2AM is a boy group that focuses on vocal quality, while 2PM is a boy group that focuses on hip-hop dance quality.

All members of 2PM participated in the audition, except Nichkhun, who was casted by JYP Entertainment himself. Some members even had experience in the entertainment industry, such as Jun.K, who had won several singing competitions. Taecyeon, Junho, and Chansung have participated in the Super Star Survival show and many more.

In addition to releasing the album HANDS UP, in the same year, 2PM also released their Japanese album titled REPUBLIC OF 2 PM. This album successfully ranked on the Oricon Weekly Album Chart.
