[Exclusive Interview] Jinyoung & Dahyun Share Their Filming Experience of 'You Are the Apple of My Eye'

Jinyoung and Dahyun are ready to make fans emotional through the Korean remake film "You Are the Apple of My Eye" which officially premieres this year. Starring two popular idols who are also actors and actresses, this film presents a sweet first love story full of memories.

1. How do you, as a director, adjust the script of the film You Are the Apple of My Eye to remain aligned with the original film version while still having a distinctive Korean touch?

Cho Young Myoung: The Taiwanese version of You Are the Apple of My Eye was very successful. There must be a reason why the film was so successful. I still used the main storyline. But since I am a Korean living in Korea, I thought about how to provide a realistic story for Koreans. How to make the story feel real. I focused more on making it realistic rather than leaning towards a Korean touch.

2. What are three words that can describe the film You Are the Apple of My Eye that you think are suitable?

Jinyoung: Youth.

Dahyun: Oh, I wanted to use that word!

Jinyoung: Memories. Love.

Dahyun: Ah, all the words I wanted to say.

Jinyoung: It's nice being the first turn.

Dahyun: I only have two words. Seriously.

What other words are there?

Jinyoung: Since it's my first turn, I’ll just go in order.

Dahyun: So annoying.

Romantic?

Dahyun: Dreams. First love.

Jinyoung: I think we can also include 'first drink' (which can also mean a first step)

Dahyun: Oh really! I was actually thinking of 'youth' earlier. Friendship.

Jinyoung: I'm helping you.

What about the director?

Cho Young Myoung: Jin Woo, Seon Ah, and their friends.

Dahyun: Well done!

3. For the director, do you have a favorite scene?

Cho Young Myoung: The one I like the most? I have several scenes that I actually like. But the one that sticks in my mind the most is when Jin Woo and Seon Ah are wearing their school uniforms. It was raining at that time. There’s a scene where they play in the water together. I like this scene because I hope their first love can be like the rain that comes suddenly when it pours. Seon Ah is an exemplary student. There’s a scene where Seon Ah is standing in the bus stop, and then Jin Woo pulls her out. It feels like it shatters her world. That’s my favorite scene.

4. Are there any moments on set that made you really laugh or cry?

Cho Young Myoung: Dahyun cried a lot.

Dahyun: That’s right, I cried a lot.

Jinyoung: I really cried my heart out.

5. What are the challenges of playing a character in a remake film? How do you delve into the character?

Jinyoung: Usually, I would watch the film multiple times. But since the character exploration started, I stopped watching. I rely on my memories from school to delve into the character of Jin Woo. So that the character comes out naturally. How I am as Jin Woo. Because the character is quite similar to me. There are some similarities, so I try to explore the character in that way.

6. Jinyoung and Dahyun both debuted as singers, are there any pros and cons you feel when working on a project together?

Jinyoung: Compared to the pros and cons, I don’t know if this is more of a senior-junior relationship or not, but we can share opinions with each other. Like, how about this. For example, we can discuss things like that together. We learn together, and there is that kind of communication between us.

What about Dahyun?

Dahyun: Jinyoung is a senior both as a singer and an actor. He has helped me a lot. During the filming, I was actually busy preparing for a concert. Jinyoung seonbaenim understands the situation very well as a fellow singer. So he can understand. I feel very comfortable, so I am very grateful.

Jinyoung: Besides that, the plus point as fellow singers is that we can also collaborate to create a song. We write songs and make them together. It’s not an easy thing to do. But we really enjoy it and produce great work. The three of us create together.

7. For Jinyoung, the character Jin Woo can be considered quite unique, how do you explore the emotional side of this character to portray such a strong role?

Jinyoung: I think simply to delve into the character. When you’re young, there’s a moment when you like someone but can’t express it. You tend to avoid the person you like when you see them. Or you’re shy to talk to them. So you end up acting like a child teasing them. My character is about how to portray someone who cannot be honest about their feelings and even wants to hide them from the person they like.

8. Is there a message you would like to convey to the audience, especially those experiencing first love?

Cho Young Myoung: For those experiencing first love?

Maybe when they watch the film.

Cho Young Myoung: I hope you can express it to each other. If not, it might end up like them. Such a shame. Besides those experiencing first love, I also hope others can watch it too. I hope they can remember their first love moments.

Dahyun: When watching the film, I hope they can feel the emotions. The memories and feelings that anyone has experienced in a friendship. This film can make the audience relive those memories. I hope you can give a lot of love and support for the film. Thank you.

Jinyoung: For me, let your first love come true. The important thing is don’t be like Jin Woo! You have to see it. Don’t be like Jin Woo! You should actually do the opposite.
