Moon Taeil, former member of the popular idol group NCT, is facing serious legal proceedings related to a sexual violence case. After being sentenced to three years and six months in prison, Taeil is reported to have filed an appeal against the verdict.
Reported from several legal sources on Tuesday (16/7), Taeil has officially filed an appeal! Read also about the verdict in Taeil's case here!
A similar step has previously been taken by the prosecution. This means that the trial will continue to the appeal stage to debate the verdict that has been issued in the first-instance court.
Previously, on July 10, the 26th Criminal Division (Da) of the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Taeil and three others to three years and six months in prison. They were found guilty of violating the Special Act on Punishment of Sexual Crimes, specifically rape under certain conditions.
In addition to the prison sentence, Taeil is also required to undergo 40 hours of sexual violence offender treatment programs, disclose his personal information to the public, and is prohibited from working in institutions related to children, teenagers, or individuals with disabilities for the next five years.
During the trial, Taeil and his associates admitted to all charges. The prosecutor had previously sought a heavier sentence of seven years in prison.
This incident itself began on June 13 of last year. Taeil and two of his friends were said to have accidentally met the victim, a foreign national, at a bar in the Itaewon area around 2:30 AM. After consuming alcohol together, they took the unconscious victim to their residence in Bangbae-dong by taxi. The act of rape occurred between 4:00 and 4:30 AM.
The news about Taeil appealing this sentence has received criticism from netizens, including Kpoppers from Indonesia. They believe Taeil is out of touch and even stated that the 3.5-year sentence is too short.
