Only a few people are exempt from military service in South Korea, such as athletes who have won gold medals in the Olympics or Asian Games. However, until 2020 there have been no provisions for exempting accomplished K-Pop idols from military service, who have made the country proud on the world stage.

By the end of 2020, South Korea announced the 'BTS Law'. Through this new regulation, male K-Pop idols who receive honorary awards from the government for their contributions domestically and globally can apply for a military service deferment until the age of 30.

In response to this, BTS also responded casually in a special interview with Rolling Stone magazine recently.

1. Requirements for Postponing Military Service for Male K-Pop Idols

Specifically, only male K-Pop idols who receive recommendations from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism can take advantage of the law that regulates the postponement of military service.

"Popular artists recommended by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of South Korea for their great contribution in promoting Korea both nationally and internationally, can now postpone their military service until the maximum age of 30," writes Rolling Stone's explanation about the postponement of military service received by Jin BTS, because he is already 28 years old.

For your information, BTS is the only K-Pop idol and the youngest recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea, for their significant contribution in spreading Korean culture and language through their works.

Jin BTS, who is now 28 years old, often receives questions about mandatory military service. When asked by Rolling Stone about the 2-year delay he received, Jin responded casually.

"I received a message from the country saying, 'You have done your best for the country, and the country will give you some time to work to the fullest,'" Jin BTS told Rolling Stone.

Jin considers this opportunity as an honor given by the country to him and BTS. Jin also plans to make the most of these 2 years with a lot of big plans with BTS until the mandatory military service arrives.

"Military service is important for our country. So, before that time comes, I will work as hard as I can and to the maximum extent, so that I can truly make the country proud," he said.

4. Will BTS Serve in the Military Together?

Jin believes that the members are capable of making their own decisions regarding military service, including when and how BTS will fulfill their mandatory military duty.

"I have never doubted the other members because they will make the best decisions. This is not something I have to tell the younger ones. If they continue promotions with 6 members, of course, I will be sad, but I will watch them on the internet and continue to support them," concluded Jin BTS.

5. Not Something to Be Feared

Similar to Jin, V also believes that military service is not something to be feared. He is even confident that everything will go smoothly. V is convinced that ARMY, the name of BTS fans, will remain loyal both during and after BTS's military service.

"I believe everything will go smoothly, so we can see ARMY again in the future. Whether it's about military service or anything that will happen, we haven't had specific discussions, but I am very confident that everything will go according to plan," said V BTS.

Jimin also expressed a similar sentiment. "I can't imagine what I would be like without BTS. I think I will grow older, grow a beard, and when I am very old, I won't be able to dance anymore, so I will just sit on stage with the other members and sing with the fans. It will be something amazing. So, as long as there is time, I will do my best," said Jimin to Rolling Stone.
