Phum Viphurit Introduces Alter Ego in the Bold EP

Phum Viphurit surprises his fans again by releasing his latest mini album titled PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 on October 17, 2024. After the success of two singles, The Other Side and Balter Baby, this Bangkok-born singer and songwriter takes his music to the next level with an eccentric work consisting of four songs.

This album tells the story of Paul Vibhavadi, the fastest bilingual sloth in the world, who is searching for peace in life. With a unique approach, Phum showcases a creative side rarely found in contemporary music. Check out more below!

The inspiration for this project came from Phum's desire to push the boundaries of the music he has been passionate about. This 29-year-old man combines his love for 2000s house music with his guitar-playing skills.   "I have long loved early 2000s house music and wanted to incorporate my guitar playing into music with that BPM," said Phum.

"This method allows me to break free from writing based on personal experiences and use my scriptwriting skills to develop characters and stories in this new little world," he added.

Phum discovered his alter ego in the sloth character that has become his personal logo. The name Paul Vibhavadi itself comes from the initials of Phum's real name, which is Phum Viphurit.   "Vibhavadi is the name of a well-known street in Bangkok, and Paul is the name I use when playing FIFA or NBA 2K," he said with a laugh.

With this persona, Phum feels freer to explore and create works that are not limited by his personal experiences.

The mini album PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 invites listeners to follow the journey of Paul, the sloth, who feels out of place in the big city. He decides to search for the magical Himmapan forest. The first song, "The Other Side", tells the story of Paul’s encounter with a tribe that worships sloths, which then brings Paul into a euphoria of worship.

The song Balter Baby, which is entirely instrumental, accompanies Paul’s moments of fun with the tribe before he eventually flies in a glowing bubble. Not only about adventure, this album also touches on Paul’s emotional side. In the song Past Lives, featuring rapper TangBadVoice, Paul reminisces about his past lives while floating in the air.

While the closing song This Is the End presents a calm atmosphere as Paul reaches the gate of his final destination, reflecting on what he must leave behind if he chooses to continue his journey. Although the character Paul Vibhavadi is merely fictional, Phum acknowledges the similarities with his own life.   "I once talked to an artist friend about this project, and he said, 'Sometimes when wearing a mask, that’s when our work becomes the most honest.' That left me stunned," said Phum.

Phum's light approach in exploring deep lyrical themes makes PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 feel very special. Although the topics may be considered heavy, Phum wants to emphasize the enjoyable side of it. "Overall, this is really fun. I am very happy to work on this character and project," he said.
