Release of the Song 'Markisa', Cinta Laura Highlights Traditional Musical Instruments

Kapanlagi.com - Cinta Laura has just released her latest single titled Markisa which is inspired by a typical Indonesian fruit. The use of the word Markisa, which is quite unique in this song, turns out to have its own story for this German-blooded artist.

"When writing this song, I was looking for a word that could describe the feeling of enthusiasm and what came to mind was the markisa fruit. But if I sing 'passion fruit' throughout the chorus, it would sound strange," said Cinta Laura during a virtual press conference on Friday (3/9).

"Because I thought the lyrics were teasing, so what would be a catchy title. But the way to say it is not 'markisa' but 'ma kiss ah'," she continued.

1. Showcasing Traditional Music

Although the lyrics of the song Markisa are in English, Cinta Laura wants to highlight Indonesian culture. Therefore, she chose to use traditional musical instruments such as kecapi Minang, saluang and sarunai from Minang, sape and Kalimantan vocals, dangdut drums, and Sundanese drums.

"I want to showcase Indonesian culture but in a modern way. Even though the lyrics are in English, believe it or not, all the instruments we use are uniquely Indonesian. There is kecapi Minang, sarunai Minang, saluang Minang, and also Kalimantan vocals. So when people hear it, they won't think, 'Oh, is this Bollywood?' or 'Oh, is this the Middle East?'. No, this is 100% Indonesian," explained Cinta Laura.

In working on this song, Cinta Laura was assisted by Eka Gustiwana who acted as the music producer. He was quite surprised when Cinta Laura wanted to use Indonesian traditional music.

"I thought, oh no, my English is also mediocre when I saw the references to Cinta's previous songs. But it turns out she wanted to explore Indonesian musical instruments. She really loves Indonesia," said Eka Gustiwana.

2. Eka Gustiwana's Challenge

For the first time collaborating with Cinta Laura, Eka Gustiwana revealed his biggest challenge. According to him, Cinta Laura is a very perfectionist person. So he has to be able to fulfill all of Cinta Laura's wishes.

"The biggest challenge is understanding Cinta's desires, Cinta's will. Since Cinta is our artist, we have to listen to what she wants, translate it into music. But I learned a lot. Cinta (works) 1000%. Even with her promotion team, management, and me, she's the most enthusiastic," he said.

Meanwhile, Cinta Laura also praised Eka Gustiwana as a producer who understands all kinds of music. She also wants to collaborate with Eka Gustiwana in future projects.

"I've never met a music producer in this country who, even though he's already successful, is so patient in listening to the singer who comes to his studio. Eka is truly multi-talented, in my opinion, it's rare to find someone like Eka who truly understands all kinds of music. I can say that this is not the last time you will see me and Eka collaborating," Cinta Laura concluded.
