Kapanlagi.com - In addition to its distinctive music, one of the most iconic things about Dongker is the stage appearance of the vocalist, Arno Zarror, who always wears a balaclava or knitted mask. Who would have thought that this strong visual identity was born from a very personal and simple reason: a feeling of shame.
Arno admitted that at the beginning of his emergence, he only wanted to cover his face because he felt ashamed when performing on stage. He had no specific visual references; his idea purely came from a desire to hide his identity in the midst of a more fierce music community.

"No, actually, I’ve always wanted to cover my face from the start because I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed because I’m handsome, not because I’m ugly," joked Arno while chatting with Kapanlagi.com
The idea to wear a head covering first emerged when Dongker performed at a festival called 'Kampung Kota' in Tamansari, Bandung. Feeling that he didn’t have the appropriate punk attributes, he decided to wear a thief's beanie that he happened to have at home from his hobby of mountain climbing. From there, the idea to develop a more personal head covering began to take shape.

"At that time in Tamansari Melawan. Well, I didn’t have punk attributes, I just wanted to wear a thief's beanie. There’s also a beanie from a well-known brand, a legendary outdoor brand. I just wore what I had at home, right? I love mountain climbing, right?" he reminisced.
After a hiatus due to the pandemic, Dongker received his first gig offer in Jakarta. To mark that special performance, Arno asked a friend to make a custom knitted balaclava for him. Since then, the balaclava with various unique designs like sheep horns and spikes has become his inseparable trademark.

"Just when the pandemic hit, two years later Dongker suddenly got invited to perform in Jakarta. It was my first time in East Jakarta. Then I wanted to perform in style, so I made that balaclava. One of our friends likes to crochet. That's where it started. After that, we just kept making it with a slightly different identity," he explained.
Without ever selling or promoting it, Arno's balaclava organically became a trend among Dongker fans. Many audience members came to their shows wearing similar balaclavas, and some even made them exactly the same, which surprised Arno himself.

"Well, there it is! I'm also confused. And I never sold it, you know. So, I never sold it and eventually there were a few people who maybe became vendors. Dongker balaclava, well that's their fortune. Some even made it exactly the same. Wow, some are identical, I was shocked. The quality is also good," he said.

Although it has now become an identity, Arno admits that this balaclava is quite troublesome in terms of maintenance. He has to wash it regularly to prevent odors and has now collected more than 20 pieces to alternate. One of the most memorable is the balaclava made by artist Ican Harem, which unfortunately was stolen while he was performing in Singapore.

"Other people don’t think about that, right? Like I have to wash, wash, or else it gets dirty, smells. And the brand name is Suture Laundry. Suture Laundry remade it and specifically made a balaclava for me to perform at Baybeats back then in Singapore. And it’s gone, man. Stolen. That was the best balaclava but it was stolen," he concluded.
