One of the defendants, Mawada Eladhm (22 years old), was arrested in May after uploading a lipsync video while dancing in trendy clothing on TikTok and Instagram. The video, which was deemed indecent, became strong evidence for the prosecution to bring to court.
"They are considered to have violated the values and principles of Egyptian society by uploading indecent photos and videos to the public," wrote the official website of the Egyptian government, al-Ahram.
In addition to being imprisoned, the 5 suspects were also fined 300 thousand pounds, equivalent to IDR 278 million. Of course, this court decision has sparked controversy among the Egyptian public and netizens worldwide.
"The Economic Court in Cairo sentenced Mawada al-Adham, Haneen Hossam, and 3 others to 2 years in prison and a fine of 300 thousand pounds," the article continued.

One defense was expressed by Mawada Eladhm's sister. According to her, uploading TikTok and Instagram videos is not a form of criminal activity that harms others.
"We are truly shocked. She did nothing wrong. My sister is not a criminal. She just wants to be famous and popular," said Mawada Eladhm's sister.
As additional information, Mawada has over 3 million followers on TikTok and 1.6 million on Instagram. Currently, the family is filing an appeal, with the process scheduled to take place on September 14.
