2. Explanation of Surah Al Maun

Yes, every surah in the Quran has its explanation, including Surah Al Maun. And here are some explanations about Surah Al Maun according to experts and scholars. According to Ibn Abbas, the reason for the revelation of Surah Al Maun is related to Ash bin Wail.

According to As Saddi about Walid bin Mughirah. There are also those who say it is related to Abu Jahal. However, they are all almost the same, they hurt the orphans who come to ask for help. Another reason for the revelation is narrated from Ibn Mundzir that Ibn Abbas said that the fourth verse of Surah Al Maun was revealed about the hypocrites.

They show off their prayers, but do not pray if no one is watching and do not want to lend anything to others. That is why, in some of the virtues of Surah Al Maun, it explains about giving food to the poor and orphans, to the point of bad attitudes of showing off.

3. The Virtues of Surah Al Maun

Every letter in the Quran has many virtues, including the letter Al-Ma'un. There are many virtues of the letter Al-Ma'un that KLovers can know. And here are the virtues of the letter Al-Ma'un:

1. Not forgetting prayer

The first virtue of the letter Al-Ma'un is that it can be a reminder for us to perform prayer. In the letter Al-Ma'un, there is something that reminds us to always establish prayer and not be late in performing it. In a hadith narrated by Bukhari, Prophet Muhammad SAW said,

"From Ibn Mas'ud radhiyallahu 'anhu, he said, "I asked the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, "What is the most important deed?" He answered, "Prayer on time." I said, "Then what?" He answered, "Being good to parents." I asked again, "Then what?" He answered, "Jihad in the way of Allah." (Muttafaqun 'alaih). (HR. Bukhari, no. 7534 and Muslim, no. 85)

2. Avoiding Showing Off

Showing off or arrogance is a behavior that must be avoided by Muslims. Even, this showing off behavior is very disliked by Allah SWT. In the letter Al-Ma'un, we are also shown to avoid showing off. Allah SWT says,

"And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude." (QS. Al-Insan: 8-9).

Then, it is also stated in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah: 264 which reads,

"O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day."

In Islam itself, the law of showing off is forbidden and classified as minor shirk to Allah SWT. This is also in accordance with the hadith from Mahmud bin Labid, where Prophet Muhammad SAW said,

"Indeed, what I fear most for you is the minor shirk (shirk kecil), so the companions asked, what is meant by the minor shirk?" He (peace be upon him) replied: 'Showing off'."

In fact, the Prophet also taught every human being to do good deeds. However, with the intention solely for the sake of Allah SWT. This will make the deeds we do have benefits. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

"Verily, deeds are judged by intentions, and every person will be rewarded according to what he intended." (Muttafaqun 'alaihi).

3. Sincerity in Doing Good

Just like showing off, we must also be sincere in doing good deeds. Our good deeds will be seen by our hearts. If we do a deed, but not sincerely or with the intention of showing off, then it will be in vain. By reading Surah Al-Ma'un, it will always remind us to be humble and always be guarded by Allah SWT from the evils that He dislikes.

4. Feeding the Poor and Orphans

Then another virtue of Surah Al-Ma'un is feeding the poor and orphans. In a hadith narrated by Bukhari, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

"Sahl bin Sa'ad narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,' putting his index and middle fingers together." (Bukhari).

In another hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this," putting his index and middle fingers together. (Al-Bukhari no. 4998 and 5659)

Furthermore, Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The one who strives to support widows and the poor is like the one who fights in the way of Allah, and like the one who fasts during the day and prays at night." (Bukhari no. 5353 and Muslim no. 2982)

5. Being Far from Reckoning

The first virtue of Surah Al-Ma'un is to keep us away from reckoning. This is because, Surah Al-Maun is included in Al-Mufashshal which was given to Prophet Muhammad SAW as an addition, so he has a virtue compared to his predecessors.

"Abu Jafar said, "Whoever reads Surah Al-Maun in obligatory and voluntary prayers, then he is among those whom Allah accepts their prayers and fasting. And he will not be held accountable for what he did during his life in this world." (Tsawabul A'mal: 156)

6. Always Do Good

And the last virtue of Al-Maun is that it can be a reminder in doing good deeds. Surah Al-Maun becomes a motivator for Muslims to do good to others.

That is the meaning of Surah Al-Maun, which is useful things, whether it is doing good deeds and charity, or how to avoid things that are not commendable in life.
