Creating a Brain Wave Detection Device, Smart Headband Created by UB Students Monitors Epilepsy Patients During Seizures

Kapanlagi.com - Five students from the Electrical Engineering and Medicine departments of Brawijaya University (UB) in Malang collaborated to create a brain wave detection tool based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The tool is named Dering (Detection and Monitoring Epileptic Seizures).

The ring is made in the form of a headband, which functions to prevent disabilities for epilepsy sufferers. This tool has received funding assistance from the Ministry of Education and Culture in the Student Creativity Program (PKM) in the field of Creative Works and will strive to participate in the selection of PIMNAS XXXVI.

What's interesting is that this tool can be monitored through a smartphone. The families of the sufferers can also know the activities and positions of the sufferers when wearing the ring.

1. Monitoring All Parameters of Epileptic Seizures

"This technology integrates artificial intelligence and processes various parameters such as brain waves, heart rate, and body tilt to detect epilepsy seizures," said Research Team Leader, Ilham Fathurrahman Hamzah at Brawijaya University (UB) in Malang on Wednesday (27/9).

Ilham explained that epilepsy is a disease of disrupted brain electrical activity that can occur in anyone of any age. Although seizures or epilepsy can lead to disability and even death, this disease is still often overlooked in Indonesia. 

Until now, there is no available device that can directly monitor the condition when a patient experiences a seizure. Dering is trying to answer this need and aims to prevent disability in epilepsy patients.

The advantages of Dering include its comfortable design, artificial intelligence that can detect abnormal brain wave activity, emergency service features, and consultations with doctors.

"Dering was created to limit disabilities or prevent bad incidents such as death due to epilepsy. Since epilepsy sufferers can have seizures anytime and anywhere," he said.

Dering offers various benefits for epilepsy sufferers, such as its economical price, safe and comfortable use, and real-time patient monitoring to prevent disability and even death.

This device utilizes electroencephalography (EEG) and Accelerometer Gyroscope sensors that can capture brain waves such as delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma signals, pulse rate, and position coordinates.

In addition, it is equipped with a danger alarm for people around the patient, so that assistance can be provided immediately during a seizure.

3. Connect to Smartphone

This technology is connected to a smartphone application, allowing it to display monitoring results from EEG sensors and Accelerometer Gyroscope, the location of epilepsy patients, epilepsy-related education, and consultation features with doctors.

"Dering will automatically contact emergency services in case of emergency conditions through the emergency call feature," he said.

4. So the Solution for Epilepsy Sufferers and Patients

The Dering is expected to be a solution for epilepsy sufferers and patients to carry out normal activities while minimizing the worries of family and relatives. Because families can monitor conditions and locations in real time.

The Dering team consists of three students from the Faculty of Engineering, 2021, namely Ilham Fathurrahman Hamzah, Lukman Hidayat, and Steffany Dilent. Meanwhile, Nidya Sekarsari Setyabudi and Nasim Amar are students from the Faculty of Medicine, 2020. The supervisors and mentors are Ir. Nurussa'adah, M.T., and dr. Shahdevi Nandar Kurniawan, Sp. S (K).
