1. What is Dukhan?

Dukhan in Arabic means mist. In the Quran, Dukhan is the 44th surah called Ad-Dukhan. This surah is classified as a Meccan surah and consists of 59 verses. In this surah, it is about how those who do not obey Allah SWT and doubt His greatness and magnificence will receive a great punishment from Allah SWT. The punishment is a dark, thick, and hot smoky mist. This is written in Ad-Dukhan verse 8 to 11 which says,

There is no god but Him, the One who gives life and causes death. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8)

But they are in doubt, they are playing around. (9)

So wait for the day when the sky will bring a visible mist, (10)

that will cover the people. This is a painful punishment. (11)

According to the narration of Bukhari, the surah Ad-Dukhan tells about how the disbelievers obstruct the religion of Islam and hurt Prophet Muhammad SAW beyond limits. Therefore, Prophet Muhammad SAW prayed to Allah SWT to send down a punishment similar to what was sent down to those who disobeyed Prophet Yusuf, which is a long dry season.

Of course, this prayer was granted by Allah SWT, so the disbelievers became hungry and only ate carcasses and bones. They always look up to the sky hoping for Allah's help. But they see nothing but fog that obscures their vision. And in the end, they come to Prophet Muhammad SAW, asking the Prophet to pray to Allah SWT for rain to fall. But after the rain falls, those disbelievers return to their previous state. That is why Allah SWT declares that they will be punished with a severe punishment.

2. Explanation of the Arrival of Dukhan on the 15th of Ramadan

Certainly, the presence of hadiths about the arrival of Dukhan, which is currently circulating on social media, has made many people worried, and there are also quite a few who ask whether these hadiths are authentic. According to the explanations from 4 companions of Prophet Muhammad, namely Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurairah, and Ibn Amr, Dukhan is a sign of the Day of Judgment that has not yet occurred.

However, according to the opinion of Ibn Mas'ud, Dukhan is a delusion or illusion that befell the disbelievers of the Quraysh tribe due to the supplication of Prophet Muhammad to Allah SWT. As for the hadiths about the explanation of Dukhan narrated by Nuaim bin Ahmad in Alfitan and Alaudin Al Al-Muttaqi Al Hindi in Kanzul Ummal, regarding the arrival of Dukhan, these hadiths are known to be false.

And certainly, from this, we can understand that the prediction of Dukhan occurring on Friday, the 15th of Ramadan this year is not true according to religious evidence.

3. Characteristics of Dukhan

Then there is an explanation of Dukhan about the characteristics that will occur. The Prophet Muhammad explained about the signs that Dukhan will appear. And the signs are as follows,

- First, the emergence of many female singers.

- Second, the abundance of music and musical instruments.

- And the third is, there are many people who drink wine or other intoxicating drinks.

As for those who believe that Dukhan will happen to mankind as experienced by the Prophet Yunus (AS), where at that time he was inside the mouth of a whale. Prophet Yusuf felt darkness, suffocation, heat, with little oxygen, and could not eat and drink. Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad taught his people to always remember Allah, like the remembrance that the Prophet Yunus (AS) did when he was inside the mouth of a whale. And the remembrance is as follows,

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inkuntu minadzolimin.

Meaning: "There is no god but You (O Allah), You are glorified, indeed I am among the wrongdoers/oppressors."

Certainly when Dukhan occurs, humans will feel an extraordinary heat that can make their skin melt, especially for disbelievers. But for Muslims who are obedient to Allah and strengthened by remembrance, the influence of Dukhan only makes them weak like being attacked by the flu.

4. What Happens After Dukhan

And the final explanation of Dukhan is that, after Dukhan strikes mankind on this earth, there will be extremely extreme climate change. Water will be very difficult to obtain due to drought. Then, of course, food will be hard to find. Because of that, people will starve and diseases will spread everywhere. In that very difficult time, slander and various calamities will continue to appear alternately.

After all the calamities come, of course, the last thing to appear is the greatest slander, namely the slander of the Dajjal. The appearance of the Dajjal during the pandemic will mislead people who do not hold firmly to faith in Allah SWT. That is why Dukhan becomes one of the phases of the apocalypse that will happen.

That is the explanation of the existence of Dukhan, you need to know that only Allah SWT knows when the time of Dukhan and the Day of Judgment will come. As devoted Muslims, it is good for us to prepare ourselves with knowledge and obedience to Allah SWT.
