1. Definition of Hadith

Hadith is an explanation of the Quran, meaning that it provides details on Islamic law. As an explanation, hadith also allows for the expansion of laws or the establishment of laws outside of Allah's provisions in the Quran. This is unquestionable and accepted by all parties because it is the teaching of the Prophet appointed by Allah SWT.

In terms of terminology, the meaning of hadith can be understood as all the words (speech), actions, and other decrees of Prophet Muhammad SAW that are made into Islamic sharia law besides the Quran. Hadith is also identical to the sunnah, but there are still differences between the two.

Hadith experts state that the understanding of the sunnah is everything quoted from Prophet Muhammad SAW, whether in the form of speech, action, taqrir, his visible and inner traits, or his life journey before being appointed as a prophet such as surviving in the cave of Hira or after being appointed as a prophet. In short, sunnah can be interpreted as all the practices that Prophet Muhammad SAW and his companions did or the way of life during that time.

In addition, you may also need to know the types of hadith. There are three types of hadith classified by scholars, namely:

1. Qauli Hadith, which are hadiths spoken by Prophet Muhammad SAW in various fields.

2. Hadith Fi'li, the actions of Prophet Muhammad that have come to us through the narration of his companions. Such as performing the five daily prayers with their proper manners and pillars, performing the pilgrimage and judging with one witness and an oath from the accuser.

3. Hadith Taqriri, the state of Prophet Muhammad remaining silent, not commenting, not objecting, and agreeing with what his companions did.

2. Meaning of Mubayyin

As mentioned above, Hadith is a mubayyin for the Quran. The meaning of mubayyin is an explanation to detail the laws of the Quran. At first glance, this statement may seem confusing. If you want to try to understand further, it doesn't hurt to listen to the hadith narrated by Imam Malik that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

"I have left two things among you, as long as you hold fast to them you will not go astray: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet." (HR. Malik in al-Muwatha')

The mubayyin evidence comes from Allah directly or through the intermediary of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Once again, Hadith is a mubayyin for the Quran, meaning an explanation to reveal a vague interpretation. Therefore, the understanding of the Muslim community towards the words of Allah can be broader.

Explanation regarding this matter can be seen in one of Allah's verses in Surah An-Nahl verse 64 as follows:

"And We have not revealed to you the Book, [O Muhammad], except for you to make clear to them that wherein they have differed and as guidance and mercy for a people who believe."

3. The Function of Hadith

After understanding the statement that hadith is an explanation of the Quran, the meaning of mubayyin is explanation or detail, you also need to know its function. The evidence of mubayyin is divided into several types based on its function, namely:

1. Explaining the global verses of the Quran

Such as the command to pray in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 110 below:

"And establish prayer and give zakat."

The verse above is still global, so a hadith is needed as an explanation. Prophet Muhammad said:

"Pray as you have seen me praying." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

Through this hadith, Prophet Muhammad provides an example of the correct way to pray for Muslims. The method of prayer is in accordance with the Islamic law as it is directly sourced from Allah SWT.

2. Bayan At-Tafsir or interpreting the contents of the Quran

You can see this function in the explanation of Prophet Muhammad about the law of theft in Surah Al-Maidah verse 38 below.

"[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah." - (QS. Al-Maidah: 38)

Based on the above verse, Allah commands punishment for a thief by cutting off their hand. This verse is still general, and Prophet Muhammad SAW set a limit that only the wrist should be cut.

"The Messenger of Allah SAW was approached by someone who brought a thief, and he cut off the thief's hand from the wrist."

3. Replacing Previous Provisions

Bayan Nasakh is a provision that comes and can abolish previous provisions. The reason is that the new provision is considered more suitable for its environment and broader. For example, you can see in Surah Al Baqarah verse 180,

"There is no bequest for heirs."

Furthermore, the hadith abrogates Surah Al-Baqarah verse 180 as follows,

"It is obligatory upon you, when one of you faces death and leaves behind a lot of wealth, to make a bequest for his parents and relatives in a fair manner. This is an obligation on those who are mindful of Allah." - (QS. Al-Baqarah:180).
